This review is from: The Story of Hanukkah (Pictureback(R)) (Paperback)
I bought this as a Kindergarten teacher attempting to educate students about Hanukkah. I am Jewish, but teach at a private school not affiliated with any specific religion. This book is wonderful for home use. It is absolutely informative about the history of Hanukkah and spares few details of the history of the holiday. However, for young students (I would say 10 and under) it is a little graphic. Though no blood is shown in the absolutely beautiful illustrations, soldiers lay on the ground, obviously dead, and a pig is sacrificed over the Torah (likewise, no blood.)For Non-Jewish students interested in learning a gentile version of the holiday, this book is clearly not the option. That being said, I will be happy to have this book around for my own children when they are old enough to understand the meaning of Hanukkah. In regards to religion, families can be much more overt with their children than a teacher can at an educational facility. This book is much more clear than others in the true meaning of Hanukkah, and I do not fault it for its honesty. |
