NOT the original Heidi,

I bought this book thinking it was the original by Johanna Spyri. It is not. I should have read more closely, but wouldn't have thought it would be re-written--why do that?
This version has many nice parts cut out--my favorite memories of the story are the vivid descriptions of the bread and cheese and warm milk, and the bag of fresh rolls taken to Grandfather from town--none of it was here! So, I have to buy the original for my daughters to pass on the true story.

I bought this book for my granddaughter. It has a quality book cover and soft feel. Living high in the Swiss Alps this is a beautifully told story about 5-year-old Heidi who is orphaned by the early death of her parents and sent to live with her onerous grandfather. She faces adversity and endures hardships and deals with adversity by educating herself and others. She is a kindred spirit with a difficult beginning, but I especially like her story because her problems are resolved and she experiences a happy ending. Switzerland is a beautiful country and the setting makes her life seem interesting. I was greatly inspired by Heidi to tell my own story of adoption. My husband attended a private school in Switzerland and we thought of Heidi often while writing my memoir while living in the heart of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.

Any books by Usborne are well worth the money! Especially this one. Our daughter loves the Heidi movie with Shirley Temple and after seeing this, she had to have it. The illustrations are so engaging and the text is close to the original story with actual photos scattered throughout the book. We love Usborne books in our home!
