Book Description

September 15, 1970 Galaxy Books
Beginning with the African musical heritage and its fusion with European forms in the New World, Marshall Stearns's history of jazz guides the reader through work songs, spirituls, ragtime, and the blues, to the birth of jazz in New Orleans and its adoption by St Louis, Chicago, Kansas City, and New York. From swing and bop to the early days of rock, this lively book introduces us to the great musicians and singers and examines jazz's cultural effects on American and the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars historical piece of jazz history, October 16, 2011
This review is from: The Story of Jazz (Galaxy Books) (Paperback)
A lovely book, a labour of love... Sometimes considered the first SERIOUS jazz history.
Too heavily leaning on sociological and ethnological insights though (I'm afraid not always supported by the more recent research), but it still makes for wonderful reading, essential for everyone who loves old and / or classical jazz...
Contemporary reader beware, the book does show the signs of times!

4.0 out of 5 stars A classic!, December 10, 2004
This review is from: The Story of Jazz (Galaxy Books) (Paperback)
Dr. Stearns's book still stands as a good source and has many clever insights. But Collier's "The Making of Jazz" clearly surpassed this book as the best history of Jazz.
