As a fan of Harold's wonderful photography books I was aware of Katie Rose's birth - he often includes an image or two of his family.
I wanted to learn a little more about Katie Rose and about preemies in general. Even though I have no personal experience with preemies I believe this book will be an invaluable resource for anyone who is interested in premature birth and in how the entire family is affected and involved. It's an absolutely fabulous and direct way of helping siblings understand what is happening and why their life has turned upside down. The depth of information presented makes it a perfect primer on preemies for anyone, and the photographs alone can help the littlest ones grasp the situation. How wonderful to be able to show them how Katie Rose, and her care, changes from week to week. They can imagine their own tiny sibling getting bigger and stronger as they follow along with Katie Rose on her mysterious journey.

As a father of twin girls who were born premature I can state firsthand this is an outstanding book. I only wish this invaluable resource had been available while my girls spent their time in NICU. The story of Katie's journey is very age appropriate for siblings to understand and appreciate. Family members will enjoy reading this book to younger children - everyone will be educated in how premature infants are cared for during their first stages of life. NICU's contain a variety of technical equipment and procedures, however Harold and Phyllis utilize a wide variety of pictures, a questions and answers section and a glossary to help explain these complexities.

"A Preemie's Journey" is a wonderful story - miracles can happen. I highly recommend this book to parents of preemies, as well as their family members and friends.

Reading The Story of Katie Rose brought back memories of the weeks my own daughter had spent in NICU over 40 years ago. I wish I had this book to read to my 4 year old son who had a difficult time understanding and accepting why his new little sister wasn't able to come home. The amazing photographs certainly would have helped us explain what was going on and prepare him for his first visit to the NICU to see his little sister.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is dealing with a preemie. It is well written and even tho it is targeted toward younger siblings, it would be helpful and comforting for parents, grandparents, and friends. NICU is a scary world for everyone. Every obstetrician and pediatrician should have a copy in his or her waiting room.

Harold and Phyllis creatively, sensitively and clearly describe the journey of the sweet Katie Rose as a preemie through the NICU before going home. Lots of images and explanations! Written in language that is accessible and appropriate for a varied and diverse audience! As an occupational therapist working with school-age youth, I am so thankful to have this book as a resource for youth and parents alike to make some sense of the unfamiliar, and what can feel scary, NICU. This book is a gem!

I highly recommend this book for anyone who will be dealing with a premature birth, and especially for children who might not understand why their new sibling can't come home, why Mom & Dad are at the hospital a lot, and what the NICU is.

The journey of Katie Rose was well written and photographed, so provides a good resource for family & friends of a premature baby. I shared it with my young grandchildren (ages 7, 4 and 3) and they were interested in seeing how she progressed, and asked questions about all the special care given to her and her family in the NICU. They were happy to see the photographs of Katie Rose and her progress, and especially enjoyed the photo of her on her 3rd birthday.

I've passed a copy on to a pediatrician friend for her use. I highly recommend this beautiful story of Katie Rose.
