Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6 The days when steamboats lured spectators to the riverbanks are long gone, yet the mystique lingers. The grandiosity and color of the steamboats is not portrayed in Stein's brief account, but the interesting basics may lead children to something more substantial. The text is sparked by some memorable adventures, including those of cub pilot Samuel Clemens and an account of the maiden voyage of the New Orleans, the first steamboat to navigate the Mississippi River. However, the omissions are many: there are no maps or diagrams, no bibliography or index. The dull drawings do nothing to bring the subject to life; in fact, some do not appropriately illustrate the text. If librarians have other steamboat books on the shelves, for example McGague's Mississippi Steamboat Days (Garrard, 1967; o.p.), or Judith St. George's The Amazing Voyage of the New Orleans (Putnam, 1980; o.p.), they can easily steer around this one. Miriam B. Hansen, formerly at Eau Claire Public Schools, Wis.
