Classic EP with rare live and studio material, January 29, 2010
This review is from: Story of My Life (Audio CD)
Story of My Life...and Other Stories is a 5-song collection released in support of Social Distortion's classic 1990 self-titled album. You know how it works with these singles/EPs; there are only a handful of tracks, but there is usually a song or two that you can't get anywhere else (file sharing aside). Here's what you get with Story of My Life...and Other Stories:
1. Story of My Life - Nothing really new here. It's a radio edit of the song, meaning it's shorter than the version on
Social Distortion. I tend to hate radio edits on general principle. The song in particular was perfect to begin with.
2. 1945 (live)
3. Mommy's Little Monster (live) - Live versions of these early songs performed in 1990. Aside from the
Live at the Roxy CD, this is the first live Social Distortion material I've heard. It has a rawer sound than the Roxy set. I wish I could have seen them way back when.
4. Pretty Thing - This is an all new studio track. It's a cover of the Willie Dixon/Bo Diddley blues hit with lots of harmonica. It's a lot of fun, too.
5. Shame On Me - This is another new studio track. It's another cover; a classic rockabilly song by Ersel Hickey. It was also included on the Japanese version of Social Distortion.
Until the band releases a box set or at least a decent b-sides collection, Story of My Life...and Other Stories is a must-have EP for any serious Social Distortion fan. It's not cheap, but between the vintage live songs and exclusive studio tracks, it is still well worth buying.
