5.0 out of 5 stars I have given all my copies away!!
My English teacher read this to my class in Grade 12, and I remember crying in class. Very touching story which reminds us of the meaning of Christmas. I have purchased this for the children and adults in my life so many times that I have run out of copies. I guess that Amazon doesn't mind that...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what it was described to be
This is not the story that Henry Van Dyke wrote. It is a retelling of his story by another person. The description does not state this fact.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Story of the Other Wiseman by Henry Van Dyke, December 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Other Wise Man (Paperback)
This is the story of Artaban, a seeker of Truth. He is the other wiseman who sought the 'great king'foretold in ancient script and heralded by the 'star'. On his way to meet the three wisemen, he is delayed. This sets him on a quest ins search of the King. It will lead him to many places and experiences. This book with its beautiful word pictures reminds us once again the importance of seeking Truth wherever we find it. It adds new meaning to the story of Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great retelling of a classic story, December 23, 2008

This is a very nice retelling (NOTE THAT IT IS NOT VAN DYKE"S ORIGINAL STORY) of the classic story by Van Dyke. The illustrations are rich and beautiful and the retelling makes the story much shorter and understandable for younger children though the wording is not condescending so is still appropriate for older children, too. It makes it a great bedtime story.

Let the buyer beware; this is a children's book, a retelling of story in short, childrens form.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Other Wise Man, January 12, 2008
This review is from: The Other Wise Man (Hardcover)
The Other Wise Man is a great story. This version, shortened to tell to children, was the right length for my purpose. I read the story aloud at our family Christmas gathering and it touched everyone's heart, young and old. The tale describes a fourth wise man who is delayed because he helped people in need on his way to see the newborn King. He feels sadness that he failed to bring his gifts to the Christ child, but is assured in the end that God noticed his kindness to those he met. A great story, beautifully illustrated.
There was one flaw: the cover on this book was mounted backwards! I would not have wanted to use it as a gift for this reason, but it suited my purpose well and I sent it on to my grandson out of state who missed the family party.
I heartily recommend the book for children or adults. It gives an excellent parable of the way our response to others is actually a response to Christ.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, February 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Other Wise Man (Hardcover)
The dimensions of this publication are larger than I expected, and is more like a children's picture book than the small books I have purchased in the past for adults. Make sure you check the ISBN of the specific version you are looking for, because all of them are different. I could not give this one as an adult gift, so I still have it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Other Wiseman, February 9, 2011

This story was facinating. I read it to my sunday school class and they loved it. After the story they drew pictures of what they would give Jesus for a gift. The story was very easy to follow and understand. The children said that the wiseman gave the best of all gifts: he loved everyone as he would have others love him. He gave the greatest gift of all: himself.

Many years ago my 4th rgade teacher read this to the class after lunch.
What a joy to now hold the story in my hands, compelte with beautiful illustrations
which it did not have in the 1940's. The message is vital to every human being:
we may not always reach our goals the way we planned, but if we truly seek the Lord,
we will accomplish what God has planned for our lvies.
