This is a children's book the way we don't write children's books anymore. It's a retelling of Roland for the young but the font and vocabulary will be challenging for some, if not many, modern children.
There are sections of this book which are a bit duller than others but in general it was a fine, well written book that introduced my 9-year-old to a period of history that most kids don't hear about. We had a lot of discussions about the historical Charlemagne (a man said to be able to hold court in his bath and who was through his life illiterate), the history of the church in politics, we talked about Merlin showing up in one of the adventures, and it carried on the idea of chivalrous manhood from other studies of knights and castles from later time periods -- including fine examples of those who say all the right things but lack the actions of virtue. |
