A favorite in our house,
This review is from: Story of the Root Children (Hardcover)
I was surprised to see the negative reviews of this one. It is another sweet and lovely classic by von Olfers, in the vein of The Story of the Snow Children or The Story of the Wind Children. It follows the little ones through the four seasons, with fanciful details about how they spend the winter preparing for the spring. My girls are especially amused by the illustration of the little children brushing baby bees and painting baby ladybugs to get them ready for the spring. It's not too long or difficult at all, we often read it at bedtime.

This books is probably ok for children ages 7-12, but it has a lot of text. Also, it was written a hundred years ago, so it is hard for young children to relate to it. The illustrations are lovely, and the idea of personifying roots and the seasons is exciting.

Nice story, but a few of the illustrations are a little unsettling for my 5 yer old girl. The old womans face was still too unhappy for her even when something good was happening.
