I have long been an admirer of Mr. Tranter's ability weave history with just enough literary license to create a love of Scottish history and the want for more. I have made for myself chronological reading list of works which have taken me on memorable trip through Scotland and its fascinating story. Of Scottish descent, his works have rekindled my pride of my heritage and my work on researching my roots in Scotland. I had the great fortune to spend three wonderful years in Dunoon, Argyll.

A sensational work. He is sorely missed. His earlier trilogies taught me so much about Scottish history and my own heritage.

this is a really good author and since he's more of a novelist, much better at keeping my attention.
While I haven't finished it yet, I know I will and it has been very enjoyable so far

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book although some of the brutal history of Scotland is not pleasurable to read. At times I was confused by all the interrelationships he describes, but presumably that is also part of the story. After being quite thorough writing about the origins of Scotland and its early history, Tranter seemed to rush through the post-Victorian era. As someone who is about to visit Scotland, I will have a fuller understanding of many of the historical sites and of the culture we will be visiting.
