Spoiler note: This was written by my brother and published within days of his death from cancer so one could condemn my review as prejudiced. But I swear to you, once I started reading this marvel I literally couldn't put it down. Elegantly written, it spins its web around your heart and mind as you root at the top of your lungs for the families as they spend years and years looking for their loved ones. I've read it 4 times now and it just gets better each time. What an epic.

My uncle was Jon Dale Horton, I was a year old when plane went missing but I do remember the year's of searching. I can remember my mother's reaction when she was told the plane was found, her brother was also her very best friend and a hero in her eye's. My family spoke of him often and what great man he was. As a family member it's a hard book to read. The author did an excellent job of telling the story of their life's before the plane was lost and of those that where left to keep up a seemingly never ending seach. Thankfully two people lost during trip threw the mountains stumbled onto the wreckage and being brave enough to pick up some personal effects and turning them in, ending that never ending search. Thank you to Bruce Gallaher for helping so many to have closure to a tragic loss and putting out an excellent book. I am so very greatful my 96 year young grandmother had a chance to read it.
My condolences to Bruce Gallaher's family and their own loss, Bruce was an exceptional man and author.

"The Big One" is a very well written book that held my interest all the way through. Bruce did extensive research into all the people involved as well as the continuous search for the plane. Even though I knew they found the plane I couldn't put the book down. It's a great read!!

This is an excellent book. Don't plan to do anything else in your day, as you want to keep reading, to find out more about the characters in this true story, as a search for the lost plane continues. It is well-written, giving beautiful personal accounts on all involved in this tragedy. I wish more thoughtful people like Bruce would write a story behind the scenes, making the people come alive, having what happened remain in our minds for a long time. Buy a copy for yourself and one to give as a gift; you will want to make sure your copy remains in your library!

If you like true stories about adventures or missing things this book was a wonderful detailed read. It was well written so that you did not get caught up in detail verses the story of what happened. I would suggest this book. Reading books on true adventures, mysteries, missing people places or things is something I enjoy.

Format: Paperback
Early in the morning on October 2, l968 four young men flew north from Albuquerque, New Mexico on an elk-spotting trip. that afternoon the word was out that the plane was overdue and missing. My husband Ken was one of the men. We had two young sons. When I heard the news, I sensed immediately something was wrong. My first thought was, "This is what happens to other people, but not to me." That night I played the piano for a meeting at our church. It all seemed unreal. Bruce Gallaher spent part of two years putting together the rest of this story. He wrote of the searches, people, ups and downs of the long five-year period and its gripping ending. My prayer is that others may be encouraged by the story. It created in me a positive influence that will last the rest of my life. I praise God for bringing me and our two sons through the experience.

Also, my present spouse's review - "The first two years of the lost plane I was not involved. I watched the first two weeks of the frantic search which was called off because of snow setting in. All was lost! During the second year I met and married Mrs. Sara Brittain. Her husband was lost now for over two years. Over the next three years we hiked, backpacked, and flew. The Civil Air Patrol came up with a list of over l00 planes down in New Mexico. The fifth year Sara said, "I give it over to the Lord. We have done all we can do." Mr. Gallaher stayed with us three days as he worked on the book. Bruce pulls the tragic story together in the end with a real surprise. Mr. Gallaher will be greatly missed by us and our family."
