Editorial Reviews

"This visit with Pibbin and his friends at Friendship Bog is truly entertaining. True friendship and courage abound. Pibbin is a wonderfully brave little character and you will find yourself falling in love with him and his friends. The illustrations are beautifully done. I highly encourage taking the time to educate your little ones about the ecosystems and animals involved." ~ Island Mama

"I enjoyed reading about the other animals in the bog in this book. Each character is described just enough to create a picture in my mind. "Boss" the beaver was a fun twist to the story. Pibbin once again shows how size shouldn't stop one from helping a friend. Children can learn a valuable lesson from Pibbin about giving to others. My 8 year old daughter is reading this book now. She already read the first book in the series."  ~ Olivia

"This charming adventure is a pleasant read. I bought it for my nephew and niece who are 5 and 6. I read it through myself and loved the emphasis on friendship, kindness and bravery. Some more highlights include the descriptions of nature throughout and the research that must have gone into creating the many characters who live in the Pine Barrens. Thoroughly enjoyable. Will be looking into more works by this author for the kids in my life." ~ graysongbird

From the Author

While I was writing Pibbin's first adventure, I enjoyed showing how Pibbin and his pal worked together as a team. Later, I began to wonder what would happen if Pibbin didn't have his big, strong friend to rely on. Could he still be a good friend to someone in trouble? Or would he have to wait for Leeper's help? As I thought about such questions, this story took shape.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome story! November 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Finally a concept in a children's book that I have not seen done a thousand times before. My kids adored this book and I will definitely be looking for more books from this author. This book begins with a cast of adorable characters preparing for a party and then things go awry when the story shell disappears. I loved that the author stayed consistent with her story throughout the book, keeping it interesting and entertaining. This is one of the best children's books I have seen this year. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a great gift or bedtime story. This book has adorable illustrations as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Courage isn't limited by size! June 15, 2012
Have you ever seen a tree frog in real life? The tiny creatures climb on our windows in Texas, and I'm always amazed at how small they are--barely two inches from top to toe. In Puerto Rico the red-eyed tree frog is considered a national treasure and photographed often. I believe Pibbin should be declared a treasure to his community of Friendship Bog.

Although Pibbin is tiny, he's got a big heart and lots of courage. Gaffer's birthday party is on the verge of ruin because his special "story shell" goes missing, but Pibbin takes it upon himself to investigate. He's afraid to go alone but he overcomes fear to accomplish a monumental feat. I believe Pibbin is the first tree frog private detective! He follows a crazy trail and risks his life to recover the shell. The story imparts life lessons that young children should understand, friendship, loyalty, and getting a job finished.

I read the paperback version of this book before I sent it to my granddaughter. The color drawings on the cover are delightful. Order this book today, read it yourself, and then send it to your favorite child. I'm sure they'll read it over and over again. After all, kids love to know that courage can come in a small package.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun, awesome message October 7, 2012
Gaffer's story shell has disappeared. It's Gaffer's birthday and it just won't be the same without his story shell. So little Pibbin needs to find the shell and save the birthday. But complications keep making his mission more difficult.

Children will love this story. The cute little characters, simple drawings and smooth flowing story will keep them entertained and engaged. The website on the back of the book allows for more interaction from the readers. My children are almost 4 and 6 years old. Both children, as well as myself, enjoyed the story. My eldest enjoyed looking at the website and learning more about the frogs. As a parent, I enjoyed the message of the story. You can be brave and accomplish big things even if you are small.

I received this book free of charge from the author in exchange for my honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Story with Great Biblical Lessons November 14, 2011
The Story Shell by Gloria Repp
Recommendation: Highly Recommended

The 2nd book in the Friendship Bog Series is another wonderful tale of adventure and friendship that young children will enjoy. Pibbin is confronted with two different dilemmas and learns to become a leader as well as learning more about friendship. First, Leeper, his best friend has been gone for a long time and Pibbin is worried about him. While trying to find him he discovers that Gaffers story shell is missing - and tonight is Gaffers birthday party and everyone wants to hear a story - what is Pibbin to do? Even though he is small, Pibbin knows he can help, and besides, his friends need him. So off he sets on another adventure through Friendship Bog.

Positives: Great lessons of perseverance, bravery and friendship abound throughout this story. Kids will love the animals they meet and the danger Pibbin encounters when he meets a beaver who "really likes frogs." It appeals to a wide range of ages. It can be read together as a family and young readers will enjoy the independence of reading a chapter book. On her website the author also provides some questions that go along with each chapter. Click HERE to view the questions and answers.

Negatives: None

Talking Points: Friendship Bog is a great place to learn about friendship - these animals truly care for each other and will go out of their way to serve each other. Gal. 5:13 and I Pet. 4:10 tell us to use our gifts and the freedoms we have in Christ to serve one another. I find that my children are more willing to serve their friends than their family members so we have to focus on serving and loving each other at home. Matt. 20:28 tells us that Christ came to serve and to give His life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inner child approved! July 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I noticed this book in the Top 100 Free and liked that it was about animals. Even though I'm an adult and don't have children, I got myself a copy. After a long day at work, I decided to relax and read The Story Shell. The book made me smile. A frog on a quest, with cool things like spider dip and homemade ant cookies. I was able to chill out, forget the world, and feel like a kid again. At least for a while. :)

This thoughtful story about Friendship Bog promotes morals, friendship, and community. My nine year old son really enjoyed this tale saying, "It is a great book!" The pictures were very entertaining and would be encouraging to a struggling reader. The appropriate age for this book is probably in line with the Magic Treehouse series... from about 1st grade to 4th for independent readers and of course toddlers to kindergardeners would love this book to be read to them at story time.

More About the Author

Gloria Repp grew up in the Hawaiian Islands and the Pacific Northwest; it was there she learned a love for wilderness that pervades her writing. She has taught creative writing, worked as an editor, and written books for children, teens, and adults. In addition to wilderness adventures, she enjoys flying in single-engine airplanes and has a particular fondness for owls and frogs.

Each family member has played a unique part in the writing of her books. Her eldest son teaches on the Big Island of Hawaii, and she has made trips with him to lava tubes and Mauna Kea's volcano; she values his insights on the natural sciences and on godly scholarship.

With her Seattle son, daughter-in-law, and grandson, she shares an interest in people and music and journeys of discovery, especially on the Olympic Peninsula. She relies on them for a reality check of plot problems.

Her daughter, who lives in Virginia, is a competent resource in matters of sewing, baking, and midwifery. The two cats who have chosen to grace her daughter's apartment have sufficient character to appear in stories from time to time and often take part in book discussions.

At home, her husband, a pilot and aircraft mechanic, provides valuable input for the aviation elements in her books, entry to the fascinating New Jersey Pine Barrens, and a strong, supporting shoulder. Although she likes traveling to research her novels, she thinks that the best part of every journey is coming home.

Gloria says: "Come talk to me at"
