5.0 out of 5 stars A Complete Supremes Collection...almost, April 24, 2010

This review is from: Story of the Supremes (Audio CD)
This Supremes collection is supreme among all greatest hits packages for this highly successful Motown group that survived many lineup changes to last until 1977. It contains all the hits and some b sides recorded from 1961 to 1973. This is the only such collection where I have been able to find tracks from the "No Hit Supremes" years 61-63 on CD: Buttered Popcorn, Your Heart Belongs to Me, Let Me Go the Right Way and A Breathtaking Guy.(If you want the original album Meet the Supremes which contain these tracks its finally being relased May 18th.) But also exciting is the inclusion of songs from the post Diana Ross years including hits Up the Ladder to the Roof ,Stoned Love and River Deep Mountain High with the Four Tops but also b sides Together We Can Make Such Sweet Music and Come Together (yes the Beatles song). The Diana Ross and the Supremes b sides include Ask Any Girl, Honey Boy, This Old Heart of Mine (the Isley Bros), I Second That Emotion(Smokey and Miracles) and Heaven Must Have Sent You.

The mastering on the tracks is excellent without the echo that often exists on the early recordings and the liner notes contain various photos and an edited version of an essay The Supremes, Motown and 60s America which is taken from a corresponding book entitled, the Story of the Supremes. I haven't purchased it yet but it would be a great read while listening to these songs.

The only issue I have is the collection omits the singles from their last album, "High Energy" released in 1976 so does NOT include the dance hit I'm Gonna Let My Heart Do the Walking or You're My Driving Wheel. These songs can be found on The Supremes Gold. Still this is the most complete collection out there and is a must for collectors of rare Supremes.

This great collection has all the big hits the group had and some of their better lesser known songs. The hook-ups with The temptations are also here.
