Book Description

September 4, 2001 7 and up2 and up
Turkey and cranberry sauce. Pumpkin pie. Family and friends around the table. That's what Thanksgiving means to us today. But has it always been this way?

Everyone knows that in 1621 the English Pilgrims and the Native American Wampanoags gathered together for a feast. But do you know what they ate and what games they played? And do you know how George Washington and Abraham Lincoln helped make Thanksgiving into the holiday that we know today?

From ancient Greece to medieval England to colonial America, people all over the world have celebrated their good fortune at harvesttime. Find out how their traditions have contributed to our modern Thanksgiving. And try your hand at making some delicious pumpkin muffins for your Thanksgiving table!

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Originally published in 1965 as Thanksgiving Day, The Story of Thanksgiving by Robert Merrill Bartlett, with new luminescent pastel drawings by Sally Wern Comport, offers an informative narrative that puts the holiday in the context of a long tradition of harvest festivals before describing the landing of the Pilgrims.

From School Library Journal

Gr 2-5-A revision of a standard on many library shelves, Bartlett's Thanksgiving Day (Crowell, 1965; o.p.). Fictionalizing has been eliminated, as has information about the year after the first Thanksgiving. The discussion of Squanto has been expanded to include his capture by English traders, travel to England, and return to the New World. New, full-color, historically accurate illustrations bring the story to life. The words and music for "Over the River and Through the Woods" and a recipe for pumpkin muffins are included. All in all, this is a successful rewrite made more accessible to children of the 21st century.
