5.0 out of 5 stars Great movie, but compare price with TCM!!!, October 23, 2009

This is one of the great movies to come out of the 1950's, with some of the most prestigious actors of that period: James Mason, Ethel Barrymore, Kirk Douglas, Leslie Caron, Agnes Moorehead, and directed by Vincente Minnellie. However, before you buy, compare Amazon's price with TCM. This is one of those rare occasions when Amazon is overpriced at $28.98, compared with TCM at $17.99. Even when you add S&H at, say, $4.00, you still pay about $6 or $7.00 too much at Amazon.

I saw this movie in theaters when it was first shown and hadn't seen it in many years (more than 50). There are three stories, each a romance. The first stars James Mason as a ballet designer and Moira Shearer as a ballerina who has been told she cannot dance because of a vague medical condition (This was 1953 and such details were not usually discussed). They meet and there is a sad ending. The second story stars Leslie Caron, as a governess, and a very young Rickey Nelson plus a delightful role as a witch by Ethel Barrymore. The boy wishes he could be a man and the witch fulfills his wish for one evening. The third story stars Kirk Douglas as an acrobat whose previous female partner died in a fall. A young girl jumps into the Seine (All the stories take place in Paris) and Douglas fishes her out. Eventually, she becomes his next partner. The ending here I will leave to the viewer. The three stories fit well and the whole thing is delightful. I am very happy to see these lesser known classics appear in good restorations.

The Story of Three Loves is one of the most beautiful titles of the cinematograohy of all times - three very different and very marvellous love stories ina single movie! And what a cast of stars!
Do not miss it. You will begin the fourth story with you and the very movie.
Try to choose which of the three stories is the most beautiful!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally released - and well worth it!, September 26, 2010

For the past 30 years, I have been searching for this film, and now, it is finally available! Hooray! It IS as good as I remember it to be, and I like the idea of the Warner Archives of great films. They are printed "on demand," which makes it affordable to produce and own classic films which would not, ordinarily, be made available, due to smaller than usual demand for them.
The warning on the back - that the disc won't play on computers - is a valid statement, as I tried it. However, most people will play it on their DVD players anyway, so that is of no great moment.
The three stories are extremely well done, with very famous stars, and the print is very good. I am going to explore the Warner Archive at great length to see what other favorite movies I can find. They don't make movies like they used to, with great stars, wonderful writers and superb music. I love this film!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional charm, beauty & quality!, August 28, 2010
This movie shimmered with beauty; not just visual beauty, but beauty of the soul, the beauty of art, and the beauty of love. Not sappy or shallow or vulgar love as in so many of today's films, but deep insights into high themes like self-sacrifice, forgiveness, trust and courage; and the power of the divine spark that can exist in art when it is done with honesty, integrity and purity.

Consider James Mason's lines that he half-whispers with such intensity to the sublimely graceful Moira Shearer after she dances for him with innocent abandon. I wish I could congratulate the writer for enriching my life with such exquisite words.

Who could forget the terrible mute suffering of the expressive Pier Angeli and the moment of truth for her & Kirk Douglas in that dark, spare room that later is played out symbolically in a trapeze act?

The lovely Lesley Caron brings to life the magnificent poetry she reads to her young, rebellious pupil. A lover of words, one who knows their power to communicate transcendent ideals, must have written her lines which she delivers soulfully and with real understanding. Utterly extraordinary classic. Unbelievable that it isn't more well-known.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it in 1954 and loved seeing it again., November 4, 2010

My great aunt took me to see this movie when I was about 8 years old and I was thrilled by it and it has stayed in my memory all these years. When I saw while browsing that I could order it , I did, not really knowing how I would feel about it. It was just as wonderful for me and I can probably trace my love for ballet, Rachmannoff, the circus (especially the trapeze) and Pier Angeli to this movie. The color and quality of the DVD was great. One thing I hadn't remember was that the little boy was played by Ricky Nelson, but at 8, I hadn't ever heard if him.

All i recall about this movie is the music. The melody is to "variations on a theme by Paganini"...through the years the hauntingly beautiful refrain is still embedded in my brain. When i think of it i play it on my piano.
