Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Singer and writer of protest and satirical songs, Tom Paxton was a favorite performer for many baby boomers. Now that he has grown up he has turned to writing a children's book for the babies of the boomers, or the toddlers anyway. Given the charm and the twinkle of his songs, it is not surprising to find the light and funny touch he brings here. He tells the story of how the Tooth Fairy business started through the relationship between a fairy named Glynnis and a wee girl called Emily. In leaving that first gift under Emily's pillow, Glynnis was trying to heal a rift between humans and fairies that went way back. It seems that every subsequent exchange of coins for teeth is another step toward human-fairy harmony.

From Publishers Weekly

Paxton (Going to the Zoo, reviewed above) explores the origins of the tooth fairy myth in this fetching picture book. Fairies have fallen out of favor with mortals, but the strain in relations is repaired when Glynnis, a fairy child, befriends Emily, a young mortal, and the two exchange tokens of their affection. Not just any token will do, however-according to the Fairy Queen, it must be something "only a mortal could give." It's not hard to guess what that turns out to be-a tooth, of course, and Glynnis sets a precedent and creates a name for herself in the fairy world by offering a coin in return. Sauber's plush, prettily bordered illustrations, aglow with velvety colors and old-fashioned storybook charm, serve as a fitting backdrop for this unabashedly romanticized tale. Pure fluff-and pure fun. Ages 5-up.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Story of The Tooth Fairy, June 4, 2001
By
This was an entertaining approach to the story of the tooth fairy. One that does not entail nor promote buying your children tons of presents for lost teeth, or giving large increments of money. A coin for a tooth! Truly a joy to read with beautiful artwork throughout. My 5 year old loved it. We have given this book as gifts to her friends, both male and female, (who are entering "tooth losing" age!) along with a homemade fairy fabric pillowcase with a tiny pocket closed with a ribbon...for their prized tooth and coin exchange. This book is one to keep to pass along to the grandchildren.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical, just right, October 27, 2008
My 3.5 year old had to have a tooth extracted this week and this story has been really lovely to share with her in anticipation of the tooth fairy's visit. For us, it was great that there wasn't too much focus on the process of losing the tooth. The story touches the heart of the tooth fairy myth -- magic and innocence. It really helped make the coin exchange special. Initially, my daughter was very focused on how much money she was going to get and what she could buy with the money. after reading this story, she is, as she should be, eagerly awaiting the fairy's visit and anticipating what kind of magical fairy coin she will receive. She could care less how much money it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming, Sweet, Enchanting, July 7, 2007

This enchanting book was beautifully illustrated and it was written with such charm, as well. Since my youngest daughter is still losing her teeth and my eldest daughter is about to lose her last tooth, I often find myself reflecting on the books that have really touched them... the ones they love to read with you and want to read to their children. This book is bound to be a classic bedtime story. If you are looking for a magical story of the tooth fairy, you will find your children going absolutely over the moon for this one!
