5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVED it. Others may not digest it so well however.
Some people have really slammed this CD but I love it. Being a guitarist myself, I was hoping the soundtrack had the song snippets from the movie. And it does! If you're expecting radio formatted 3 to 5 minute singles, you'll be disappointed. But if you truly loved the simple, beautiful guitar arrangements Clapton did in the movie, you'll like this CD. I got this CD because I thought it would have the version of Classical Gas that was in this movie. I was really let down. The rest of the CD was ok, but it didn't have the song I thought it would. The version I was looking for had both Mason Williams on guitar, and other instruments in the background. This is not that song. This is just Mason by himself.

So here is a warning to anyone looking for the same song that was in both the preview and the movie: THIS IS NOT THE SONG YOU ARE LOOKING FOR!

If you're expecting radio formatted 3 to 5 minute singles, you'll be disappointed. But if you truly loved the simple, beautiful guitar arrangements Clapton did in the movie, you'll like this CD. The only other warning is there are only 3 different guitar arrangements repeated throughout the CD with subtle differences. I can see where this would turn a lot of people off. But I REALLY loved those 3 arrangements so I was happy to hear them repeated throughout the CD.

Fans of Eric Clapton's masterful guitar playing and stunning arrangements will consider this a must-have. The inclusion of Classical Gas is an extra-added bonus. The entire CD just made me happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome with a CAPITAL A, July 19, 2000

This soundtrack is great! My girlfriend had it and she thought I would like it. Being a guitar player, I really appreciated this album. There are lots of great songs from the movie that sound some what like whats on Eric Clapton's unplugged CD. There are lots of other great songs too. Truely a CD you can pop in and listen the whole way through!

While Aaron was disappointed with the version of Classical Gas that appeared on the Soundtrack, it was exactly the version I was looking for. I am a classical guitarist and I love Mason Williams song Clasical Gas, but I wanted to hear it without the orchestral arrangement to improve my playing of it. As for the rest of the soundtrack -Its OK, some nice soft guitar but I am not a great fan of Eric Clapton's soundtrack style. I would never see the film unless it was to earn brownie points with the wife - ie. chick flick. You can get the original of Mason William's Classical Gas by searching at Amazon. That is where I bought it.

Matt

4.0 out of 5 stars Soft and Smooth, July 29, 2001

This review is from: The Story of Us (Audio CD)
When I first saw the trailers of this movie some time back, I wasn't much interested in the film as much as the music that was playing during the preview. That song kept on haunting me. I knew what it was, but I just could not pin point out what it was exactly. That piece was Classical Gas by Mason Williams. I had heard the Asian violist Vanessa Mae play her version of the song in her debut album. The song itself worked on so many levels. I just wanted to buy the album just because of that very song.

Time passed by and I completely forgot about a movie called the Story of Us. I just knew it didn't do too well in the box office when it was released. Two years later, I had the chance of seeing it and experiencing the music of it all. Eric Clapton succeeds in creating the right temp to the movie's theme about love lost and break up and then the realization that feeling in love is not like being in love. You can never severe the connection between being in love. And Clapton captures that in the soundtrack of this movie.

The music is soft. It's heart warming. The highlight of it could very well be Clapton's two songs. The established "Wonderful Tonight" and the original version of "I Get Lost". The latter song means a great deal to me and it is the song that at times of wrong and anger with my loved one brings us back together again. Clapton sings it with such ease that anyone emulating him is able to do so. This is a personal song and can be sung out by anyone, anywhere to his loved one and still not sound cheesy. The last piece of music in the album is so sad and yet hopeful that you just want to listen to it again and again. Clapton truly knows the magic of playing the guitar just right to justify your emotions and that of the movie.

And what about Classical Gas? The song is really well done. A great many did not like it because it's of a different style. Though it is, you should bear in mind that the song is incorporated in a soundtrack and plays on the same level of the movie itself. It delves with the theme of lost love and heartache. In the end, it is the right piece to play when you think of your life and past moments. This is the song to play after 15 years of marriage. This is the song that defines the Story of Us.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kick off your shoes and wind down..., January 31, 2003
This review is from: The Story of Us (Audio CD)
I'm such a sucker for a good soundtrack. This cd is slow and great for winding down... It's encourages reflection, I think... Great for relaxing and zoning out...

It's mostly instrumental by Eric Clapton... And the biggest plus for me is that it has "Classical Gas" on it, second to the end... Which I just LOVE!! I can watch the movie The Story of Us over and over, just to see the 'flashback' scene near the end of the movie which has "Classical Gas" playing in the background. I cry every time... In a good way...

I'm so impressed, and very glad I bought it. I think anyone who needs to relax as much as I do, could appreciate this cd.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Eric Clapton CD with 2 songs that don't belong, September 23, 2000
This review is from: The Story of Us (Audio CD)
This is a good CD--I read the other reviews before purchasing it. The "Classical Gas" track is not the same as the one used in the movie, but still enjoyable. I do not like the tracks that have somebody humming along with the instrumental--it is annoying. Also, the Teddy Wilson song & the Andrews sisters song I could do without. Basically the CD is comprised of the main track by Eric Clapton repeated in different length snippets. Since I like Eric Clapton, I liked the mellow guitar instrumentals. Except for skipping a couple of the tunes you can enjoy the whole thing straight through.
