Profoundly Thought Provoking Book,
By John Paul Donnelly "Bo" (Atlanta GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Man in the Box a Story from Vietnam (Hardcover)
I had to laugh when I began to read the reviews for this book. It seems over and over that people read this book in grammar school in the late sixties or early seventies. I am no different. I read the book in fifth or sixth grade for a book report project, I believe, and I agree with all the other reviewers of this book that I have read. After all these years, I still come back to this book over and over. I cannot explain the draw, other than the book is a very real, very personal experience and that the story is told in such a beautiful way. Yes, this book is about Viet Nam, but it is really about a human being finding himself in an absolutely astonishing way. I am saddened when I consider how many people may never have read this book, and I really want people to know that reading this book will make a person a better person. I am most concerned that there might be a generation gap between the readers of the book and the non-readers. I suppose that since the book was released as a children's book, exposure to adults was limited at the time of its release, but "The Man in the Box" is really everybody's book. For me, this book belongs in an elite group with the classics of literature, and my feeling is that, if anyone who reads "The Man in the Box" has a favorite book, you'll have two after reading this book. Stars do not do this book justice. Please, if you have an opportunity, read this book! You won't be happy, you'll be stunned; this story is an extraordinary story! PLEASE!!!!!

This is an amazing book. A real eye opener and personal account as to what happened to the POWs and MIA's in the Vietnam told through an account of one man's story. An unimaginable and very graphic story that really hits home and gives you a whole new respect for what our service men dealt with during the war, and even years later if they were unlucky enough to have gotten caught. I have read this book a couple of times, this one is a keeper for any library collection. Its words and message certainly stand the test of time.

I read this book back in grade school. The 5th or 6th grade. Around 1968 or 1969. It was just by chance that I happened to choose this book to read. It was a book I could never forget. Very rewarding. I could not put it down. I'm looking forward to reading it again. The very purpose of my visit here is to order this book. A great book!
