3.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointing
Perhaps this book is a good resource for kids six and under, but my kids (ages 4, 6, 7, and 9) found it less enthralling than many other resources we have used. It gives adequate and comprehensive coverage of the historical period, but lacks meat, isn't a particularly engaging book. I have been somewhat of a fan of Susan Wise Bauer, but found this book disappointing.

Can't even say how much I love this book!

The best book/resource I ahve found for homeschooling history EVER. Makes history interesting-- they beg me to read them another chapter. It is so nice to finally find something that the kids find interesting, that explains, and teaches, without over doing it, without losing thier interest, without overwhelming any of us with extra activities to do along with the book, or rediculous inaccuracies. My boys are k-3rd, and have always homeeschooled. The 4 year old will listen to one chapter, and the 8 year old really loves it and wants to read on. Generally I read a chapter or two and my art-driven children draw pictures about what tey have learned. This has been very effective. Definately worth buying new, and I can't wait until the next of this series comes out.

Good job to the author!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a winner for our family, July 4, 2003
This review is from: The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child; Activity Book One: Ancient Times, First Edition (Paperback)
Despite reading a few bad reviews for this activity book, I decided to purchase it because I feel I'm lacking in creativity when it comes to making history fun with hands-on projects. I wasn't impressed with the price until I received the book. I now consider this a very valuable resource and definitely worth the money.

The first half of the book is a chapter-by-chapter resource list that includes discussion questions, narration samples, art projects, related literature list and additional history reading suggestions. The second half of the book is a collection of student pages including map work, coloring and activity pages.

I am positive that many resourceful people could manage SOTW without this activity guide. However, I am grateful for this book. I am sure we would have been missing out on so much if I had relied on SOTW alone, or if I had attempted to pull such resources together on my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest History Book Ever, May 11, 2003

Well-written history book of ancient civilizations written in a storybook format. Simple and concise maps. My kids love it (ages 5 & 7) as do I. I supplement it with other materials such as the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia, but find it a very good basic text. My only criticism is the binding has worn out quickly so I wish I could find it in hardback. I highly recommend it for the younger kids, early to mid-grade school or even beyond with more supplementation.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed., April 19, 2003

This is a really good book to read to your kids for History. The chapters are short and simple, but you adn your children will come away knowing more about History that the average high school graduate! I like that it is chronological and it includes history from less studied areas like China, India, etc. but it integrates them all together. This is a great resource for home school moms who are teaching History with real books!

Now to my disappointment. I know that Mrs. Bauer is a Christian so I was disappointed to find that she did not include the story of creation in this book. She begins the history of people with some nomads who wandered around and eventually started to settle and farm and build cities. The author does include other Bible stories in the book so I am disappointed she chose not to include creation, the Flood and the tower of Babel. Almost all ancient history books teach evolution and I was excited becasue I thought a Christian author would finally include the creationist view. So, for that reason I am disappointed.

I would have bought the book even had I known, but I thougth others should know this at the outset.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely introduction for children to world history, October 14, 2004
This review is from: The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child; Activity Book One: Ancient Times, First Edition (Paperback)
"Story of the World: Ancient Times" turned my six-year-old daughter into a certified history buff. It's a wonderful chronological, narrative approach to ancient history, and our family appreciates the generally secular tone, which allows us to add supplemental books supporting our family's beliefs.

We used the book along with the accompanying activity guide, which includes blackline maps and coloring pages, as well as crafts, games, and supplemental reading lists to delve deeper into the subjects presented in "Story of the World: Ancient Times."

Very boring, don't read before bedtime if you want to retain anything. We are a homeschooling family and my kids despised it. I couldn't get into it either. I'm sure there are better resources out there, just take the time and look around.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, frugal resource, May 1, 2003
This review is from: The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child; Activity Book One: Ancient Times, First Edition (Paperback)
This is a great book, and I would highly recommend it to any homeschooling parent looking for a relaxed, secular history curiculum. It is less like a cuyrriculum, and more like a springboard by which we are inspired to create unit studies, trips to the library, etc.

I recommend the workbook as well, although this text is a worthy read all on it's own.

1.0 out of 5 stars A very bland and boring "story" of history, July 19, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child; Activity Book One: Ancient Times, First Edition (Paperback)
This author left out entire civilizations in this book - why? A "Story of the World" - at least any book claiming this title - should include the real story. One of the most important events in the history of the world for a person of any religious background is/was creation! This is left out of the book. This history is told in a childlike way with lots of little stories. The stories are a bit much and will bore the average child older than five years old. In all, this is a very, very simple view of history and should not be used for any parent wishing to really teach history to their children.
