Book Description

January 17, 2008

History will never be the same again!

This spirited reading of the first in Susan Wise Bauer's Story of the World history series brings to life the stories and records of the peoples of ancient times.

Now more than ever, other countries and customs affect our everyday lives-and our children need to learn about the people who live all around the globe. Susan Wise Bauer has provided a captivating guide to the history of the ancient world. Written in an engaging, straightforward manner, The Story of the World weaves world history into a storybook format. This volume covers the major historical events from the years 1600 to 1850—from Elizabeth I to the gold rush in California.

This Story of the World audiobook is a collaboration between Jim Weiss, whose voice has been described as “liquid gold” (CNN-TV), and Susan Wise Bauer, whose writing has been described as “timeless and intelligent” (Publishers Weekly). It may be used along with the print books (The Story of the World Volume 3 Text Book, Activity Book, and Tests; each sold separately), as a supplement to a traditional history curriculum, or independently. Approximately 11 hours on 9 CDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have!, February 4, 2011

This is a wonderful addition to our library. It's great to have in the car and at the house. The way the narrator reads the stories makes you feel drawn in and part of the series. It is beneficial to also have with the books. The children love to read along with the audio and become familiar with pronunciation as well. It's a must have.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good resource with faults, February 10, 2009

This review is from: The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child, Vol. 3: Early Modern Times, 2nd Edition (9 CDs) (Audio CD)
I purchased this to use along with the Story of the World text and activity book in our homeschool. I thought it would give me a much needed break from reading everything to my non-readers. It is an unabridged reading of the text, although Jim Weiss's reading is too affected and unnatural. Perhaps some people would like this kind of sing-song reading, but it gets irritating after a couple of chapters. My kids often ask me, "Awww, Mom, couldn't *you* just read it?"

The biggest problem with this product is that there is no index for the recording. If you are following along in the book and stop mid-chapter to come back another day, there is NO way to figure out what track to go to on which CD. For instance, Disc one has 10 tracks and is labeled "Introduction-Chapter 5", with no more details.

If you are looking for a book on CD to listen to while you are in the car or doing other things, this may meet your need if you want to hear some general stories from world history. However, if you are looking to use this as a tool to complete the curriculum, it is not very user friendly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend Audio, August 27, 2011

This review is from: The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child, Vol. 3: Early Modern Times, 2nd Edition (9 CDs) (Audio CD)
First, I would like to say that this series of 4 textbooks/storybooks has been such a joy for my children to study. I, too, have really liked it, and have learned along with them. These books combined with the test packet and activity book make a wonderful curriculum. You can really do as much or as little as you like. We like to go all out and do all the projects, crafts, coloring pages, maps, extra recommended reading, and so on, but even just reading through these alone would be beneficial for a young child or even an adult with little history knowledge. Now, I would like to recommend the audio book. It is really worth the extra if you can spare it. The first volume I read aloud to my children, the second volume my kids read independently, now with the third volume we have the audio to go along with the hard copy. It has been such an appreciated addition to our study. I wish I would have bought the first two earlier. We will for sure be using it for volume 4, as well. The kids love hearing it, and it helps with hard to pronounce names and places. I could tell right away that they were doing better on narration exercises and tests after listening and reading, as opposed to only reading. Worth every penny! I now have the kids read the assigned chapter for the week independently, then before taking the test we all go through the chapter a second time while listening to the audio and following along in the book. Love this!!
