Thorough Coverage of Yosemite, January 6, 2008
This review is from: Story of Yosemite National Park [VHS] (VHS Tape)
At nearly 70 minutes, this video takes its time telling the Yosemite story, and that's the way it should be. The park is over 1000 square miles of incredible scenic beauty and anything less than an hour would be woefully too short.
Beginning with the geological past and moving to the last native inhabitants, the Awanichi, the story of Yosemite is told. It moves from those beginnings to the first visit by an American in 1833, then on to a California state park in 1864 (with the help of Abraham Lincoln), and finally a National Park in 1890. As you are taken through the tracing of the park's history, you are shown excellent video and still photographs of the noteworthy features in Yosemite that make it such a landmark (over three million visitors annually): El Capitan, Half Dome, the Mariposa Grove (Giant Sequoias), and various waterfalls.
Standing out in the program are two prominent figures: John Muir and Ansel Adams. Muir, one of the founders of the Sierra Club, did much to preserve and protect what we now know as Yosemite National Park. Adams, of course, is famous for his black-and-white photography, and he produced some of his best work at Yosemite. Americans owe both a great deal of gratitude; Muir for saving the Yosemite and Adams for helping us to see the magnificence that it is.
Three stars. Well done program, although the background music sounds like a bad 90s movie at times.
