In the early 1970's there was a made for television version of The Selfish Giant that was enchanting, touching and gorgeous in it's animation...THIS IS NOT IT! If you remember the original version then do not waste your money and time on this completely substandard version. The animation on South Park is a Disney film compaired to this crummy version, and the songs are terrible stinkers.

I ordered this DVD because for literally years and years I remembered this incredibly-animated story from my childhood and wanted to watch it in its entirety and share it with my fiancee. I couldn't open it up fast enough, and threw it in the DVD player and....I nearly cried. THIS IS NOT THE VERSION THAT EITHER I, NOR YOU, WERE LOOKING FOR! This is NOT the movie that played during the early 70's and then inexplicably disappeared from TV!!! It's a cheap rip-off!!!

This DVD opens with some corny and cliche'd "grandfather, tell me a story" shot on cheap film, and then presumes into cheap watercolor slides which are not even animated--think of placing characters on the screen and then replacing them with other static, cut-out characters and you get the idea. There is NO animation per se, only this super-cheap method of telling the story. It looks like the producer hired a local artist to approximate the scenes from the original version and then hired some amateur voice-over actor to tell the story. All in all, a heartbreaking, cheap, extremely disappointing version. I feel ripped off!

You can see the original version on Youtube--in three parts. At least it still lives on somewhere--but I wish someone would find the original reels and convert this magnificent masterpiece to a proper DVD!!!

This rendition is fine for little children.A truly superb reading was done on LP by Basil Rathbone. If this could be found and transferred to CD perhaps with animation it would become a cherished gift for the world to share. The recording also includes the Happy Prince and The Nightingale and the Rose. Hear it once and you are hooked.

I was very please with speed of the DVD being delivered to me. It was also in the good condition that I had been told it would be.
