Book Description

August 1, 2000
'Storyteller' is a full portrait of the writer of 'Tobacco Road' and 'God's Little Acre.'

The book tells of Caldwell's unpredictability, harsh mood swings and extramarital affairs; also of his warmth, gentleness and generosity.

His books have sold 80 million copies in forty-three languages. Only the Bible was ahead in sales.

This book is an attempt to better understand this American teller of tales.

Editorial Reviews

Review

An extensively and thoroughly researched biography. This is a well-written story of Erskine Caldwell's tumultuous life. JOHN N. COLE -- Lewiston, Maine, Sunday Journal, October 8, 2000

From the Publisher

Erskine Caldwell had little control over the things he was writing and never allowed himself the luxury of interfering when a character in a story misbehaved. He,the author, had no right to shackle this offender with virtues. Blessed with a colloquial authenticity, Caldwell gave his fictional characters a rugged durability by keeping the diction simple. Here was a writer who possessed the true burlesque touch: vulgarity mixed with rural humor and folklore, neurotic situations passed off as ordinary occurrences, and tragedy which began with laughter and ended without remorse.
