Complete, powerful summary of Lynd Ward's life and works, September 20, 1997
This review is from: Storyteller without Words (Hardcover)
As a young boy, growing up in Florida, I would spend hours poring over copies of Lynd Ward's books, --God's Man, Mad Man's Drum, Wild Pilgrimage. There were no words, only the dramatic black-and-white images (occasionally sepia-and-white) of Lynd Ward's woodcuts. They were dark, visceral, beautiful, political, sexy, symbolic -a series of woodcut print images that linked together to tell a story, but somehow the story was different each time I read through it. What a treat when I received Storyteller Without Words as a gift. This coffee-table book contains not only the three above books in their entirety, but three others as well, as well as other examples of woodcut illustrations for other works. Even better, each section has an introduction by the artist that discusses the art of woodcuts, and the artist's life and evolution. But it is the images that linger in the mind<b> - the strength of the men and women, exquisitely detailed and 3-dimensional<b> - the symbolism, mysterious, inspiring, macabre<b>- the human struggles and emotions - the greed, lust, fear <b>with these powerful images, words are not necessary

Someone Please reprint this book!!, January 23, 2006
This review is from: Storyteller without Words (Hardcover)
Lynd Ward is a master of woodcut illustration and this beautiful coffee table book is the only large collection of his work. His six wordless woodcut novels were a high water mark in illustrated novels. This volume collects all six of them, most of which are out of print, along with a strong selection of his other woodcut illustrations. The design of this book was supervised by Lynd Ward himself and each chapter has an introduction by Ward. It's a bargain even at collector's prices but it would be nice to see a new edition of this book. This artist deserves to be in print.
