Vasconcelos--Storytelling, September 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Storytelling (Audio CD)
I found this album by accident and was very pleased. Nana Vasconcelos performs exceptional Brazilian folk music. I do not know Portuguese and do not need to in order to appreciate the simplicity of and meaning behind the music. I listen to this album often and even choreographed dance to it...if you are interested in traditional Brazilian music, the roots of Bossa Nova, definately check this out. Virginia Rodriguez is also someone to look for, and Cesaria Evora (the latter being from Cape Verde).

A "GOOD" cd, October 3, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Storytelling (Audio CD)
Someone once said that if Naná Vasconcelos ever lost his luggage, with all his instruments in it, on his way to a concert, he could still do it, and it would bring people to tears. That is exactly what you'll get in this album. If you're looking for harmonious bossa nova or Brazilian popular music go somewhere else. I'd say this is folk music at its rawest. One of the best cds I own.

Colorful and Soulful, August 10, 2009
This review is from: Storytelling (Audio CD)
Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos may be best known to most readers for his work with Pat Metheny or perhaps from his collaboration with Don Cherry and the late Colin Walcott in the group Codona. Storytelling features him as a leader and composer in a remarkable recording that blends together many diverse musical textures and natural sounds that blend together into a bright, colorful, and soulful collection of Brazilian-inflected music with roots in Africa and beyond.
