5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent text on sensitive wedding photography
Barbara Box wrote and illustrated a wonderful book on sensitive wedding photography. Her keen eye captured moments overlooked by most wedding photographers. Her images are priceless glimpses into the "true" events on a wedding day. This book is inspirational and should be a part of every wedding photographers collection.

1.0 out of 5 stars I'm returning this book IMMEDIATELY!!!, January 15, 2004

What a waste of money! I read a negative review by another reader and STILL bought the book --- BIG mistake. The cover design is beautiful and that's what probably fools hundreds of people. The content is a total disaster!

There are MAYBE five good shots of over 100 featured. The author obviously knows nothing about photojournalism and very little about photography in general. Plus, her writing style is on grade school level and the photography tips are... ugh...

I feel sorry for all those brides who hired her to document their big day. I'm sure they'll have some "storytelling" to share.

I got another book by the same publisher: Amhest Media - it's also going back TODAY. Is seems like low quality is their standard.

For solid advice and excellent photography examples, choose The Art of Wedding Photography by Bambi Cantrell. The quality of the editorial is excellent, ditto for the photos.

If you still don't believe me, go ahead and buy the Barbara Box disaster book. You'll see for yourself.

1.0 out of 5 stars You've got to be kidding, this book ..., April 22, 2003

There's no doubt this book will give a different perspective but there are other books that will do the same thing, look for Bambi Cantrell or Philippe Cheng for a real wedding book. These are terrific.

This book shows photography from another perspective. It helped me to be more creative in my own style and gave me more ideas. Good book to have in your library.

Again what other readers have said, you will learn nothing from this book, I felt like I was reading a diary, I was looking for more technical information, the pictures themselves quickly got boring after a while, how many half cut torso and zoomed in hands do I want to see anyway? There's some reportage quality to the pictures bit there are better books out there I'm sure, don't be fooled by the nice front cover, there's a reason why this book only has 4 sample pages

The quality of printed photos are not brilliant in this book, but the book is a great one to remind you why you fell in love with black and white photographs. The details of weddings are highlighted here, and it is a good book to keep as a reference tool.

2.0 out of 5 stars I want my money back!, December 26, 2001

Barbra Box did write a book that was laid out nicely, and easy to follow. The book did have a strategy, a goal and purpose, and to that end it was successful. However, it really didn't say much. The quality of information was sparse, and tended to repeat itself over and over again. For example, it made the point of needing a fast camera with indexed metering at least five times. The wedding photography style was described close to the end of the book, along with explanation of equipment. It would have been better at the front of the book.
It took a while, but she finally described her style as photojournalistic. I appreciate good photojournalism, but her style is simplistic and repetitive. The majority of the photographs were close up images of hands, and parts of dresses, and wedding accessories. While there were a few really good images, and a good justifation for tilting the camera to enhance composition, a lot of the images looked like snap shots. Her choice of a very high speed film (Kodak TMZ 3200) made for a lot of images that were very grainy, with poor tonal values. There were a lot of examples of images taken in the bridal room that showed people with darkened eye sockets. Not flattering in my opinion.
To the extent that a person can pick up this book and say "Hey, I can do that too" the book was successful. But what to do with the boatload of the resulting B&W images wasn't explained well. They showed a sample album which the majority of the final images were color that her husband took. What I would have found useful was to know how to sell them as a premium item? Do people buy stand alone images of these for framing? If so, how do you present it?
Overall, this book needed a wider variety of style, more of her better photographs, and more concrete information.

I like this book very much. The way of illustrate from start till the end. However, if possible, Barbara should include some info about the charges of the service. Quite a nice how-to book to read.
