From Library Journal
This sourcebook is good on presenting general storytime ideas but poor on helping the reader in their execution. Book and audiovisual titles for 100 themes are followed by activity, craft, and fingerplay suggestions, but for detailed instructions the user must locate the further sources cited. There are no illustrations to give assistance. The age range, three through seven, is not subdivided, and users attempting suggested activities with children at the extremes of the range will encounter difficulties. Titles are generally appropriate but not annotated. In comparison, A to Zoo (Bowker, 1986) offers subject access to many more titles. Further, Peggy Sharp's Amelia, Burt and Charlie (Parkside Pr., 1979) ties its activities to the literary qualities of books. There are many good titles and ideas here, but the "menus without recipes" approach is likely to leave storytellers unsatisfied.

For 10 years the first edition of
The Storytime Sourcebook (1990) has provided helpful suggestions for books, activities, crafts, films, and filmstrips to be used in library storytimes for young children. The new edition is a hefty, large-format paperback featuring one theme on each spread, rather than one on each page. Today's
Sourcebook not only includes new titles published in the 1990s, it also replaces the films and filmstrips with videotapes, expands the number of individual storyhour themes from 100 to 146, includes CDs as well as cassette versions of songs, and doubles the number of craft ideas for each program. Best of all, instead of suggesting five picture book ideas for each theme, each section now offers 15 titles. A new feature is the "Topical Calendar." Arranged chronologically within each month, it suggests several holidays or notable events that can be related to a storyhour theme. For example, March entries include National Umbrella Month, the birthday of Dr. Seuss, and St. Patrick's Day. Though the price may seem high, this practical guide will quickly pay for itself in staff time saved.
