4.0 out of 5 stars The music tells the story December 1, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I can't believe this soundtrack is almost 20 years old, yet nobody has bothered to review it. This is one of my favorite pieces from Carter Burwell (Rob Roy), and he remains either underrated or entirely unknown to the majority of movie-goers - particularly to those who think that the sun rises and sets behind John Williams.

Storyville is an interesting story, but it is that much better stronger due to the musical layers Burwell compliments the film with. The orchestrations are heavy - ala Thomas Newman (Shawshank Redemption, Flesh and Bone) - but it offers a rich oriental layer that enhances the experience by blending cultures and truly capturing the mood of the movie. He handles action scenes well. In other words, the action scenes do not become a collage of cymbals and horns that makes the soundtrack utterly unlistenable. Storyville was a low-budget, virtually unwatched movie from 1992, but if you see if for the first time two decades later, it doesn't feel dated, due in part to the brilliant music of Carter Burwell.
