Product Description

An ABS Handle attachment that allows you to grip a tool higher on the shaft of any long-handled tool, so you stand up straighter-avoiding the awkward bending that is the primary cause of lower back strain and injury. It allows your legs to take the burden off your back. Makes your work easier with Shovels, Snow Shovels, Garden Rakes, Hoes, Pitchforks, Push brooms, Tree Trimmers, Paint Extension Poles, Fishing Poles, Dip Nets and more. Helps prevent injuries on the job. It significantly reduces the bending, leaning and lifting that can lead to back and shoulder fatigue. Fits any long-handled tools and moves easily from one tool to another in minutes. Made from tough, ABS plastic and guaranteed not to break for 2 years. Installs in 2-3 minutes without tools.

Great concept, but the product is garbage... Installed on a snow shovel according to instructions and placed the shovel with the Backsaver Grip attached in the garage. Went to use the shovel less than 24 hours later after 3-4 inches of snow fell, and the grip attachment is splintered around 3 of the 4 contact points for the screws. Installation was exactly as instructed with the screws and wingnuts tightened just enough to keep the attachment from slipping during normal use - product broke and was unusable after less than 24 hours sitting in a closed garage with average temperature in the 30s. Even better, the attachment didn't just crack, it splintered into multiple pieces with sharp, jagged edges - at least it happened spontaneously and not while in use. Great idea, but execution is cheap and not certainly won't hold up to any real use, or in my case, any use at all.

I first saw this handle on clearance at a local store for $2.50 a few years ago. After trying it and finding it extremely helpful, I went back and bought 6 more. I have mounted these on 2 rakes, 2 snow shovels, a tree lopper, a pole-mounted chain saw, and (as of yesterday) a pole-mounted hedge trimmer. Mine are all older (I think) models which fasten with 6 screws, not 4 as shown. Any tool mounted on a pole is going to be somewhat clumsy to use, but this handle makes it a lot less so. You should try locating the handle at various point on the tool's handle to see where it balances best and provides the best leverage. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

The lower handle on my Black and Decker Grass Hog string trimmer broke and the part has been discontinued. I tried using the trimmer without a lower handle and it proved to be a disaster because I had to bend over too far. Some Internet research turned up the Stout Backsaver Grip, but I couldn't find it in any local store despite Stout's website saying it was available. Thus, I ordered it from Amazon. Extremely easy to install and it solved my problem immediately. This would be an excellent way to add an auxiliary grip to something like a snow shovel or a rake.

I ordered two Back Saver Grips from a third party seller (Hardware Plus Tools) on Amazon because I didn’t have Amazon Prime and the third party seller offered free shipping. I received the grips today in the mail and I read the hardware mounting instructions. The instructions said to use the included wing nuts to do the mounting. Instead of wing nuts, my mounting kit came with hex nuts and a star washer. This makes having to reposition the back saver grip more difficult, because I will need a screwdriver and possibly a wrench instead to do so. If I had received the wing nuts as stated in the instructions, repositioning of the grip would have been much easier, since I could have loosened the wing nuts with my fingers.

I then went to Back Saver Grip’s website (www.backsavergrip.com) to see if they had an installation video. While browsing the site, I discovered that contrary to the lifetime warranty statement stated on the brochure / mounting instructions, the website notes the warranty is two years.

I called Back Saver Grip’s customer support number to discuss these issues. I was told that the Back Saver Grips I bought were older models and that’s why I got hex nuts and a star washer instead of wing nuts. As to the discrepancy in warranty terms, I was told that the warranty is now only two years. As to the reason for this change, the representative told me something to the effect that a lifetime warranty was…excessive… or unreasonable… because the grip is exposed to the elements.

Next, I went to Amazon’s site and think about initiating a return based on the above. There is no mention as to mounting hardware or warranty so I’d have no legs to stand on for a return with the third party seller. I call Amazon and explained the situation to Anesha M.

I was rather dubious when I purchased it, but it was inexpensive so I figured I would give it a try. I'm glad I did.

Installation is easy. Though, a pair of pliers really helps tighten the wing-properly.

It encourage better posture while shoveling - I find that I use my back less and my arms and legs more when using it. After this most recent storm we had in the Northeast I had about 2 feet of snow to shovel. The next day I experienced no back pain like I often do after shoveling large amounts of snow.

My only complaint is that if you may need to modify your shoveling motion if you tend to twist the shovel as you move snow. I've found that the grip attachment will rotate if that action is used. But overall the product is great. Highly recommended.

Anyone looking at this in March is probably wishing they bought it 6 months ago, and I am so glad I did. I am particularly tall (6'6") and shoveling absolutely kills my back. I have a shared driveway that sits between 2 houses, so i often have to pick up the snow and carry it 20 feet before throwing it. This grip doesn't make shoveling easy, but it massively reduces the stress on my back, I don't bend over nearly as much, and I can throw more easily and with more torque. It probably makes shoveling 30% easier - and given the winter we just had, that is a blessing.
