I did a lot of on-line shopping until I decided on this one. I looked at the Rola and Thule as well, and they all looked good, but I got this one because it had the most space (16 cubic feet, as opposed to 13 for the Rola 59109). Turns out, it has other advantages, also.

First, excellent customer service. The StowAway Max is not offered under Amazon Prime, so I went directly to the seller website and they were offering a $40 discount. When I finalized my on-line order, I noticed that the discount hadn't been applied, so I wrote them an email. Immediately (within hours) I got a reply saying that they would apply the credit to the credit card ASAP. About a minute later I got a confirmation, so I knew they were serious.

Next, they shipped the next day, and I got it in about three days. The packaging was pretty flimsy, but it all came intact (in 2 boxes). The installation instructions were pretty simple, and all the parts were included. It helps to have a nice socket wrench set or a pair of large crescent wrenches. None of the parts are very heavy and even a light weight guy like me can do it by himself. The hitch tightener is included, and the "Plus" package (which was offered free) also includes a hitch lock. The swingaway arm was sturdy and had no movement play at all once everything was tightened. The hinge point is a large bolt, and the nut is a little hard to screw on, and to do it right you need a large wrench (I had to use a pipe wrench for torque because I am not that strong). The cantelever turns out to be very strong, and I could lean my entire weight on it without tilting at all.

I purchased the StowAway Max cargo carrier with the swingaway frame about one year ago. I have taken the cargo carrier out on trips many times and have been very pleased with almost all aspects of the units. It has been well worth the money.

The Stowaway2 Max swingaway carrier is quality piece of American manufacturing.

I bought the Stowaway2 Max swingaway carrier for my van to increase the living space inside of the vehicle on long camping trips.

The Stowaway2 website is nicely done. Almost all of your questions will be answered by surfing their website. There are numerous photos of the products, along with a very useful vehicle fitting guide. Check out their "Showroom."

The Stowaway2 Max swingaway frame is solid. This is a heavy piece of steel. A simple latch allows you to swing the frame away from your vehicle. A large-handled screw secures the frame closed when you are driving. There is a metal pin that you can insert to lock the frame in the open position. Unfortunately, the pin is anchored to the frame with thin aluminum bracket that broke within minutes on the first day of use.

The Max cargo box appears to be made out of the same plastic as my whitewater kayaks, so there's no worry about durability. Instead of a rubber gasket to seal the edges of the lid (as shown on the website photos), newer models now have a water channel that runs around the edge of the box. Apparently this works better than the old rubber gasket, and in reality I have had no problems with water getting inside.

The website photos also show the white cargo box as being a bright white. However, when contrasted with my white van, the cargo box appears to be more ivory in color than white. I think the black cargo box would absorb too much heat.

Getting ready for the our second road trip with the StowAway Max Cargo Carrier. The box is sturdy, strong, reliable and I get tons of compliments and comments from people on the road.

I used to have the rooftop carrier which proved to be a major challenge each time I needed to get something from it. I would have to carry a small ladder to climb up and stretch and tiptoe not making it safe or easy. With the StowAway this has all been eliminiated! Once installed the items inside your carrier are easily accessible at anytime during your trip. Also, the cargo has a lock and key keeping your items secure if you overnight at a hotel (which I normally do).

I live on the east coast and had no problem receiving the delivery to my house. Set up with easy with simple instructions and any questions or concerns I had their customer service were outstanding and very responsive.

If you road trip, tailgate, or just need extra cargo space, this is the carrier for you. Simply the best investment I made when it comes to cargo carriers! Kudos to StowAway!

We used this for a 16 hr trip home to Louisiana for Christmas with 2 young kids. This allowed us to store most everything in there leaving much more room in the vehicle.

The box itself was extremely sturdy and well built. With the hitch tightener I felt no shake in the box and it seemed very secure. At times I even forgot it was back there as it sat low enough to not been seen in the rearview mirror.

The only downside was losing my backup camera, and the backup sensors going crazy every time I put it in reverse, but on a long drive you don't use that too much.

Now that we're home it is quite large to store, but I'm thinking of using some pulley lifts to get it out of the way. Overall though I would highly recommend it.
