5.0 out of 5 stars Review for Strabo's Geography, books 15-16
This is a very good source of information about History although it is Geography. Strabo provides us with location of people and rivers, mountains. This helps clarify what the Historians were saying, which sometimes was not true. Strabo was pretty accurate. Loeb collection is so cute, so handy with the Greek (or Latin Text) on your left and the English translation on...

3.0 out of 5 stars good info, lacking illustrations
this will sound childish, but i expected pictures. or at least artist renditions of the text. living in this part of the world is fascinating; history goes back very far. the book is descriptive and very educating. as mentioned in the other review, a good source of information on the area. the inclusion of maps may have added a better grasp of the text. and allowed...

5.0 out of 5 stars Review for Strabo's Geography, books 15-16, May 12, 2007
This review is from: Strabo: Geography, Books 15-16 (Loeb Classical Library No. 241) (Hardcover)
This is a very good source of information about History although it is Geography. Strabo provides us with location of people and rivers, mountains. This helps clarify what the Historians were saying, which sometimes was not true. Strabo was pretty accurate. Loeb collection is so cute, so handy with the Greek (or Latin Text) on your left and the English translation on the right, that it makes it a pleasure to read the text. The comments given by the translators are helpful most of the time. Yet they can be extremely annoying when they criticize too much the author they translate. If the author is so "reckless" or so brief, or biased, then why did they spend so much time translating this author? Sometimes it seems they feel superior, forgetting they have the advantage of reading other authors to compare with, of archeaeology, and technology the author did not have. Sometimes, I feel like giving a good thrashing to the translator and his pompous comments.
