Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up-A perceptive and informative analysis of an emotion that can be both useful and dangerous. The authors probe biological reactions associated with anger and present situations that may serve as provocations. There are excellent discussions of hidden anger and passive-aggressive behavior, strategies for constructive release of anger, and valuable suggestions for using it as an ally to correct injustice. The authors offer advice on coping with the anger of others and descriptions of instances that call for professional assistance. An explanation of a helpful counseling relationship, a much-needed aspect of all teen-problem titles, is provided in the closing chapter. The book demands patience from readers, however. The early sections are wordy, and from time to time a didactic attitude surfaces. Renora Licata's Everything You Need to Know about Anger (Rosen, 1994) covers some of the same ground, but in far less depth.

From Booklist

Gr. 7^-12. "To express anger effectively, you need to understand what you're feeling and why." Like other books in the Straight Talk series, this gives serious, in-depth consideration to its topic, presents some solid self-help tips, and uses teenagers involved in everyday-life situations to make the discussion more relevant. Unlike Beckleman's more concise Anger , this has no appealing photos, and the format is so dense and unattractive it may scare off some readers. But teenagers who are genuinely interested in psychology or who want the real low down on their angry feelings won't be disappointed: the book is filled with fascinating insights into the nature of anger, why we lose our tempers, and what happens when we do, as well as how best to manage anger in ourselves or cope with it in others. Stephanie Zvirin --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
