Five BIG Stars!! Stimulating, swinging, invigorating trio jazz!! This is my first Don Friedman trio recording since the legendary "A Day In The City", when Mr Friedman rose on the same remarkable 60's jazz piano wave that gave us, among others, Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Steve Kuhn, Keith Jarrett, Joe Zawinul, Clare Fischer and Paul Bley: quite a remarkable group that dominated a wide spectrum of keyboard jazz, and its survivors are still very active 'keyboard royalty'. Friedman, ably assisted by the redoubtable Chuck Israels and the remarkable Joe Hunt on drums is virtually 'completing the circle' here by regrouping with the original members of that recording of 4 decades ago, and even conjuring up "A Day in the City Revisited" to end this recording. We know Don was friends with Bill Evans but I hear more Bud than Bill underneath and mostly pure Friedman, quite pianistically evolved over the years and as fleet & imaginative as ever. This is straight-ahead jazz and Don Friedman & Co are swimming deeper than most.

The 'best of the best' begins with the hard-swinging somewhat Monkish sizzler "Straight Ahead", with great Friedman runs trading space with interesting Hunt solo accents, as Israels adds some stout pizzicato underpinning. "Circle Waltz" recalls yet another Friedman recording of renown and, if one compares it to Bill Evans' waltz "Very Early", the difference in approach and pianistic touch is apparent and dramatic. The incisive two-handed Friedman attack is pure wonder and Israels' solo also shows his development. "Minor Ballade" and "When It's Time" are lovely ballads. "Flamands" has a wonderful "You and the Night and the Music" quote amid some joyous inter-play between Messrs Friedman and Israels.

Fellow bop fans, Don Friedman is one of the few. His piano is sensational. It is a joy to watch him play.
I have a new favorite when I thought all was lost. The trouble is I like to see what he does with the
standards but these are very difficult to find. Try" I hear a melody" or any standard by this guy.
You'll be a big fan.

This trio album, recorded after a long time separation by three old friends, is simply a smooth, straight ahead jazz performance. When I purchased the album I was hoping for a more driving, swinging, straight ahead performance: it is not that. This is the type of album that one might listen to on a relaxing, late saturday evening. It is not a five star recording. I reserve my five star ratings for Bill Evans, the past master of jazz piano
