Book Description

January 1, 2005
The autobiography of one of the UK’s most flamboyant and charismatic stars, guaranteed to shock, amuse and tantalize.

In the thirteen years since the conclusion of the first part of his memoirs, Take It Like a Man, Boy George has reinvented himself. As that story closed, George was coming to terms with the fall-out from his drug addiction, the failure of his relationship with Jon Moss and the collapse of Culture Club. For lesser men this would have been the end, but for George it became the start of a period of startling personal and creative reinvention. Told with George’s trademark biting wit, brutal honesty and sparkling insight, this new book will bring his remarkable story up to date: from his role as a world-class DJ spearheading the dance music revolution in clubs all over the world, to his cutting-edge record label, and his role in the theatrical sensation Taboo.

Tracing the momentous twists and turns of Boy George’s personal and artistic life over the last decade-and-a-half, Straight will not just be a riveting companion volume to the bestselling Take It Like a Man, but a truly fascinating book in its own right.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rosie, Madonna, and Taboo, January 28, 2008
This review is from: Straight (Paperback)
This book seemed to encompass and cover a lot of his personal opinions on homosexuality, the music world as it is today, and all that has happened in the 90's and 2000's. Madonna seems to a main subject within the book as well as Rosie O'Donnel. I think that George secretly admires Madge although he writes somewhat disdainfully of her interspread through the chapters. You kind of wonder as much as he mentions astrology and the way people are according to their sign how he could not regard Rosie as a typical Aries. Did he ever hear of arrogant Aries? It is great to read his Gemini banter on all things, his opinions on everything and anyone. I much preferred Take It Like a Man because you were taken on a journey of his life and his feelings. That book you felt like you were reliving his life with him as he told it. Whereas this book you were taken on a journey of his ever changing opinions and insights on everything. The best and only part of this book I enjoyed was how George was able to let go of fame. The myth, the trapping, and the responsiblity that came with his fame. He has learned to let go and truly be himself and not what everyone wanted him to be. This is why he is so opinionated and outspoken now because he has learned to let go.

3.0 out of 5 stars The World According To George, December 24, 2006
This review is from: Straight (Paperback)
Not so much autobiography as a series of loosely fitting essays. Straight talking? Well, we have a cover photograph that has obviously been selected/photoshopped to make George look thin...what does that suggest about the content?

There are some great one liners in here...but also a lot of forced/dud ones. Lots of pop psychology too, that exhibits a certain degree of self-awareness but little if any self-control. It's mostly a tale of self-indulgence.

I found the book vaguely depressing. George rants about "straight acting" gays being self-hating whilst he himself is obsessed with seducing "straight" boys??? Forget what I said about self-awareness!!

Take It Like A Man was far superior...Straight has the feeling of jottings that never made it into the original.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mad About The Boy, April 17, 2010

This review is from: Straight (Hardcover)
Boy George is the freshest queer voice out there who still makes a stand for those of us who didn't assimilate or try to be St8 acting and str8 appearing. The book picks up with George's disenchantment with the Krishna Religion, because they don't accept homosexuality, covers his DJ Career, touches on the Culture Club reunion, Kirk Brandon's lawsuit, Madonna, George Michael and of course--Taboo. I found myself laughing and enjoying the book immensely. A real page turner. All I can say is more Boy George!
