Book Description

October 14, 2010 Straight to the Heart
Straight to the Heart is a series of devotional commentaries for those who appreciate the insights and sound research found in commentaries but find scholarly writing dry and lacking in personal application. The Straight to the Heart series does not cover the whole text, but focuses on key sections that communicate the main themes of each book. Although the tone is light, the text is full of useful application and backed by substantial scholarship. Its clear, thought-provoking insights will feed both mind and soul.

Editorial Reviews

"Phil Moore has served us magnificently . . . He writes so relevantly and with such submission to biblical revelation." (Virgo Terry Newfrontiers 2010-11-30)

"Most commentaries are dull. These are alive. Most commentaries are for scholars. These are for you!" (Michael Green Wycliffe Hall, Oxford 2010-11-30)

"Outstanding: biblical and passionate, clear and well-illustrated, simple and profound. God’s Word comes to life as you read [Moore’s commentaries], and the wonder of God shines through every page." (Wilson Andrew author of Incomparable 2010-11-30)

4.0 out of 5 stars Deep, Yet Accessible January 14, 2011
Every once in a while I like to review Bibles and Bible resources. However, with so much being published and produced about the Word, it's hard to lock in on what's worth purchasing. Can I make a recommendation? Phil Moore's Straight to the Heart series. While I've only read Straight to the Heart of Acts, I can tell this series is promising and will serve as a great resource. Here's why:

Moore writes with great pastoral wisdom. Moore, a member of the Newfrontiers movement, is a fantastic teacher. He's not only knowledgable, but makes it relatable and immediately applicable. As moore explains, Acts wasn't written merely to excite or enthrall with how God moved in the early church. It was also written to enlist you.

Each book contains "60 bite-sized insights." The idea behind the Straight to the Heart series is to target in on the absolute essentials of these books of the Bible. Keeping these entries bite-sized means you don't get overhwelmed with peripheral details. The main things stay main.

The book is deep, yet accessible. With commentaries I want readability. If it takes reading and re-reading to understand, I'm going to struggle. With commentaries, I also want depth. If you aren't a scholar like me and you don't have formal training in the original Biblical languages, you want someone who understands them. So you have these two ideals in mind with commentaries: depth and readability. Moore achieves both.

Moore emphasizes application. When it comes to resources, I want something that will stretch my thinking and stir me to apply what I'm learning. It's too easy to study and not do something about it. Moore challenges the reader to not engage the book of Acts like a history textbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Straight to the Heart...Book of Acts February 17, 2012
Straight to the Heart Series Phil Moore...Book of Acts

This book starts out with 2 bite size chapters, one introducing the reader to the Straight to the heart series, and the second introducing ordinary people to an extraordinary God. Followed by 58 bite size chapters taken from the book of Acts. I first thought this was a commentary on the book of Acts, but it is more like a devotional, but it's actually much more and much deeper than a devotional. It would make a wonderful Bible study for yourself, or any number of groups. There are footnotes and references at the bottom of each page to futher your study too!
A few short chapter topics you will find here are: Prayer which moves God; The Promise; Starting Points; Betty Zane; When the Past Becomes a Problem; Job Decription; and several of my favorites are Paul's First and Second Missionary Journies and Paul's Journey to Rome.
There are so many Bible Studies, and Devotionals out today that are good, but I would rate this one as top of the line. The chapters are written in a way for you to have a short study, or to go futher and deeper into the Book of the Bible. I highly recommend Phil Moore's book on Acts to see for yourself what it is like. You will not be disappointed. After reading this one, I want more books in this series for myself.
This book was provided by Kregel Publishers for me to read and review. I was not required or expected to write a positive review. The opinions here are mine only.
