When he's good, he's very, very good...,
This review is from: Straight to the Heart (Audio CD)
My first exposure to Sanborn was this album - a tape I played in my car 15 years ago. I'm glad. I saw him in concert at Pier 6 in Baltimore - I apologized to my date for the show. He said he was tired from the road - and I feel for him - it showed. I have other albums by David - and I just don't enjoy them. This one is pure gold though. If you like his joint effort with Bob James - Double Vision - you'll like this. I also recently got Secret - by Brian Culbertson - whose does another take on the song, Straight to the Heart, that is superb. If I had to choose one CD to have if I were trapped on a desert island - it would be this one or Double Vision. When he's good, he's very, very good...

Best version of Run for Cover & my all time favorite recording, Love & Happiness,it's perfect. It's also the first time a vocal appears on a DS album.

the best Sanbourn album,
This review is from: Straight to the Heart (Audio CD)
i've listened to alot of this man's work but nothing hits me like this album that he did with Marcus Miller.and yes they did a great job with Love&happiness.the cat that sung that song turned it out.he can sing but i still take Al Green.but it's close.one hundred ways got a good treatment.david sanbourne has done other covers of Als but it's magic on this one.i haven't really gotten into his work since this one however.this is the essential one to have for me.

This is easily my favorite David Sanborn album. It is better than his other popular album Backstreet!! It is easily worth the money. I've gone through three cassettes and never get tired of it. Many times coming back to the album and appreciating it even more.

When I started listening to jazz..the song 'Hideaway" on this CD was the first song I ever listened to. It was back in 1996, and I was 11 years old. I mean...come on...David on sax and M2 on bass? Can't beat that. You have other songs like "Smile", where Hiram Bullock does an amazing guitar solo toward the end of the song. My other favorites are "Run For Cover", "Straight to the Heart", both written by Marcus Miller, and David's beautiful cover of the classic "Lotus Blossom". And this CD's version of 'Lisa' is my favorite. You have to buy this CD...no questions asked. Just do it. You'll be happy you did.

This is one of my favorite David Sanborn albums from the man himself. He always put out stuff that's real. He has his mentor and bass player Marcus Miller doin the beat. This CD is funkdified with a lotta soul, lotta funk, lotta jazz, lotta everything. I own this on cassette but sooner or later I'll buy it on CD. Good job on a perfect, Mr. Sanborn, U're da man. Wish u do more in the future 'cuz I'll luv to hear from ya. I officially play the trumpet and 'specially can sing well.

COOKS!!!,

This review is from: Straight to the Heart (Audio CD)
In front of a respectful audiance David Sanborn delivers a fine set that proves his skills are truely on stage-not as a studio bound hack who can't cut it live. But HERE Sanborn and his band COOK and kick it live until the last set of applause has died down and everyone probably went home in a better mood!Great to chill out AND to get to-double DYN-O-MITE!!

Love and Happiness,

Al Green's version of "Love and Happiness" is still the classic but this version is more lively and more fun. "Straight to the Heart" - what can you say - it's the best.

Just May Be Your Cure For The Blues,

George Clinton once said "funk not only moves,it can remove". Michael Jackson once said,"Music is a doctor that can cure a troubled mind". Today, I realized how true both those statements can be. Had this on a cassette tape for years and rather enjoyed listening to it. But today I was recovering from a rough week, put on some music to paint by. But let's just say it was the wrong music for how I was feeling. I went to the recent CD purchase I made of this album and put it on. My goodness was it what the doctor ordered. Recorded live in SIR studios in New York, while not being a formal live album exactly (more live in the studio type event) with his right hand man Marcus Miller of course,Hiram Bullock as well as guests The Brecker Brothers and Hamish Stuart are able to successfully bring their studio sound to the more live setting extremely successfully. And with very groove friendly results."Hideaway" is given a great treatment here. A bit more 80's in flavor, especially coming only five years after the original. Most of this album consists of sophistifunk at it's finest from the title song,"Run For Cover" and "Lisa". Sanborn is his usual wonderful self on these tracks. But Marcus's ultra funky slap bass really sparkles on these songs. "Smile" is an interesting piece, ten minutes long and starting on the slower and smoother side but ending with a firey Hiram Bullock guitar solo. On a version of "Love & Happiness" Hamish takes on the lead vocal. Very slick yes but actually not too far from Al's version, which was measured by the production slickness of the previous decade and the previous place. Sanborn too is explosive on this number as he is on the slower urban contemporary R&B/jazz "Lotus Blosson" and "One Hundred Ways",originally sung by James Ingram. Overall this isn't all that surprising an album for David Sanborn. Most of the albums he did from the late 70's through the late 80's were all consistently strong and well made. The main stand out of this point is how much it demonstrates the instrumental chemistry and creative potency of the David Sanborn band of this era while playing together as a band. Over the years it would almost seem to be more important to people how a record was produced than how high quality the music was. In this particular case, any such critic can breath easy. Sanborn's playing is always strong. And he always surrounds himself with the most like minded musicians. And I really just can't state enough how many of this albums positive qualities are built around chemistry alone. |
