5.0 out of 5 stars Poor Old Lu's Best, February 13, 2002
This review is from: Straight Six Ep (Audio CD)
This is the best Poor Old Lu album bar none, and the one that got me hooked. The melodies are very good and quite musical. The lyrics are top rate, and the performances are awesome (per usual). Probably the only complaint I have is that it is too short! I want more!

It is impossible to pick out a best track, all 6 are wonderful. Song 1, Lie, Lie, Lie starts off the album right and sets the pace, with a catchy hook and rift. Bittersweet brings the tone down a bit, but still rocks and really nails the ending. Next up is Slipknot, back in the same vein as Track 1, good rift and strong bass. Digging Deep is a bit of a departure musically and features a duet with Jeremy Enigk (Sunny Day Real Estate). It is a beautiful song with some good arrangements and has a unique sound. For the Love of My Country is a great, great rocker. Some of Aaron and Jesse's strongest work. The album ends with Speak Soft, a cover, and the perfect way to end the album. Its a somber tune that causes the listener to think.

All in all this is Poor Old Lu at its best and really makes me wish they were still around. Also, if you haven't checked out the members' solo stuff, do so, you will not be dismayed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music As Art, February 2, 2006
This review is from: Straight Six Ep (Audio CD)
Straight Six is fantastic. Easily, it is the most interesting and complex album released by Poor Old Lu. Everything feels right in this album. The added orchestration and percussion in this album really add to the beauty of Straight Six, so do the vocal stylings of Sunny Day Real Estate's lead singer Jeremy Enick. The conclusion of this album features a cover by early 90's rock band The Swoon. The cover is better than the original track. If you are looking for something that has been overlooked in the past, purchase this album. It is a darkly beautiful piece of work and wont disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE premier christian rock band, July 24, 1999
This review is from: Straight Six Ep (Audio CD)
this album is just a glimpse at how amazingly talented poor old lu truly as. they were able to "unplug" their sound and in doing focus the listeners ear on deeply introspective and thought-provoking lyrics while exibiting amazing musical artistry. the album is sonically beautiful. I will take music fan from NC one step further and say pol is hands down the greatest christian band ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Marvelous., March 12, 1999

You just don't get better than Poor Old Lu. These guys... there's just so much that they do just right; a true music fan can not express the wonders that this band has accomplished in words. The music is truly incredible. As with most masterpieces, though, it does have to grow on you (so listen to it a lot).

5.0 out of 5 stars ok...i'll review this one, too...., March 10, 1999
This review is from: Straight Six Ep (Audio CD)
it may have been a short album....but i still love every bit of it....'lie, lie, lie' was the one to get me hooked on it....and i really enjoyed the guest appearance of jeremy enigk on 'digging deep'....but the song that always lingers is the haunting melody of 'speak soft'....i hate to think that lu is no more....but their legacy will always live on in their music....God has truly blessed them all...

Possibly the greatest Christian band ever, pol has managed to blow us away in new ways. From the hooky "Lie Lie Lie" to the funky "Slipknot" and the driving "For The Love Of His Country," this is a must have for fans of good alternative music.

This album is a bit more mellow than some of their other stuff (Sin or The Waiting Room), but with that mellow rock comes some great music and even greater lyrics.
