Lead-in to "Normandy", not much better,

This review is from: Straits of Messina (Hardcover)
Another in VAdm Mack's Destroyer series, this offers the same ship and characters which return in "Normandy". This is just slightly better than Normandy, but fails for the same reasons (see my review of that novel). The book in a way parallels wartime, in that you get page after page of boring dialogue, punctuated by a few paragraphs of excitement. But here, the excitement isn't really that exciting. Most of the combat narrative reads more like a dry history book than a historical novel. You get a rather bland description of what is going on, but without most of the tension and human drama you would expect. Stick with "South to Java", it's a solid winner. "Straits of Messina" is eminently forgettable and worth a miss.
