Informative Surprise,
This review is from: Strand: An Odyssey of Pacific Ocean Debris (Paperback)
I learned more about the Oregon Coast by reading STRAND than I've learned from exploring it for the last 25 years. Henderson is an intelligent writer. STRAND is an inviting, informative and sensitive treatment of the subject.

OK,I admit I'm a complete addict when it comes to natural and human history meets beach meets research that ties it all together. If you are attracted to the idea of John McPhee going soulful, written with joy and wonder, YOU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK.

Bonnie Henderson has captured a part of ocean life few know about unless you are a scientist or intrepid beach comber. It's my kind of reading - well written narrative of her personal discoveries with well researched facts. It leaves one engaged and informed.

It's an interesting read, but she goes on and on about these birds and such and a long long account of the glass floats that are found on the beaches out here. I was more interested in the wide variety of things that are found on the beach, not some personal in-depth historical overview of certain items. I was hoping for lots of interesting weird items that we aren't aware that wash up. Anyway, never made it all the way through before throwing it in the drawer.

Way more than just beach reading,
By Mary Beth Averill "writing coach" (Eugene, OR) - See all my reviews

After reading Strand, I want to be a regular beachwalker. Henderson's love of the Oregon coast comes through as strongly as her thorough research on glass balls, whales, birds, and shoes that fall off cargo ships.

Fairly interesting but thought the author stayed on each item she found way too long. Makes for a good skimming book.

A great way to visit the Pacific coast from the comfort of your couch, on a chill winter day. The diverse discoveries are pulled together with ease and attention to detail. The chapter on the wreckage of the Sanak reads like a Jon Krakeaur story....fast and riveting.
