2.0 out of 5 stars ... higher expectations (?)
Well, I originally heard this song on MTV, and then I heard 'Brighter Than Sunshine' in the film 'Just Like Love'. After I saw the appearing everywhere, and seeing VH1 talk about Aqualung, I figuired that it was going to be great. So, I decided to purchase it. I guess I expected to hear more songs like 'Just Like Love', but most of the songs were sung in his high...

Strange and Beautiful is lovely and melodic, overfilled with quiet piano work and brooding vocals, moody stories that seem perfect for a quiet and rainy day or a thoughtful night.

Aqualung is, essentially, Matt Hales. He hails from the U.K. and has made a name for himself there with two albums: a self-titled debut and his follow up, Still Life. For his U.S. debut, songs from both of his U.K. albums have been pulled together to form Strange and Beautiful. The album starts off with the title track, which introduced the U.K. to Aqualung when it was used in a Volkswagen commercial. Hales sings the simple refrain, "I'll put a spell on you / and when I wake you / I'll be the first thing you see / and you'll realize that you love me." It is instantly appealing and one of the most pop-oriented tracks on the album, yet manages to not be forgettable, either. It's a sorrow-tinged love song that introduces the listener to Hales' voice, which comes across throughout the album as contemplative and searching, sad and thoughtful without succumbing to outright depression.

While the album as a whole is strong, there is certainly a differing level of quality amongst the songs. The title track is great but the next two are merely decent songs, never reaching the sort of heights as the first. But the fourth track, "Brighter Than Sunshine," then comes in and picks the record back up. This is a much more positive, upbeat track that, pardon the pun, really shines. The album then moves into a mixture of strong and simply good songs before flowing into an amazing second half.

Interestingly, as "Brighter Than Sunshine" makes clear, even an upbeat song from Aqualung feels mere steps away from tumbling into dark corners of the mind. This is a strength of the album--the ability to always be within reach of the more melancholic states of mind. Combine that with the fact that this tactic never seems indulgent or tiresome and you have the perfect album for when you're in a quiet mood. Hales' voice is smooth and soothing, confident over his piano work and always imparting a sense of weariness that, nevertheless, does not overwhelm or depress the music. It's a fine line he straddles, being able to perform an upbeat track while keeping the listener aware that sorrow often comes hand in hand with happiness and joy, feeling it lurking there under his words, ready to come forward at any moment.

Aqualung is original, yet familiar. You'll hear definite strands of Coldplay throughout the album and there are moments that sound like less-eccentric Radiohead as Hales' voice takes on qualities of Thom Yorke. Thankfully, though, the songs never come across as derivative. Aqualung's music is clearly its own, building on the artistry of others rather than attempting to mimic it.

The first half of the album is solid but a bit uneven, moving through a series of songs that vary in their sound. The greatest strength comes toward the end of the album, starting with "You Turn Me Round." This is where the record's atmosphere fully kicks in. The songs become darker and more melancholic, laced with pain and too much experience. The vocals are gorgeous and the piano work encompassing. "If I Fall" is soft and subdued, plaintively asking for safety and comfort. The following song, "Easier To Lie," is a strong and subversively up-tempo track.

Strange and Beautiful's final two songs are magnificent, offering a wonderful cap to the album. "Extra Ordinary Thing" is a haunting lullaby, with Hales' voice sounding consistently on the verge of being overwhelmed with emotion. The piano is perfect, building on and accentuating the lyrics to create a pervading sense of beauty and unease. The final track, "Another Little Hole," perfectly sums up the album, continuing the quiet and haunting tone of "Extra Ordinary Thing." Hales bookends the opening song's tale of putting a spell on his love by singing, "The day is breaking / and time is taking / the love we're making away. / The gods have spoken / the spell is broken / and love will tear us apart." It's a sorrowful song and not particularly hopeful, but it is beautiful. And that, perhaps, is how best this album--and Hales' expressive lyrics--can be described: beautiful. Sorrowful and lilting, yes, and haunting and thoughtful, without a doubt, but first and foremost beautiful. How appropriate the album's title turns out to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Work of Art, March 24, 2005
This review is from: Strange & Beautiful (Audio CD)
I bought this CD yesterday having not known much about it. I heard Aqualung a year or so ago on a "Best of British Acoustic" album. I hadn't really thought to much about looking into them until yesterday. I saw this CD and listened to it and was blown away at how beautiful the music was. The sticker on the outside said the best band since Coldplay. I agree. In fact they are right up there with Athlete and Feeder who I feel are the closest to as good as Coldplay.
The CD is full of laid back piano rock. The lead singer(which also is pretty much the whole band) also has a great voice. Lyrics are very moving. I just can't seem to get enough of the sad love songs. This CD is what Keane should have done. Don't get me wrong I like Keane, but their lack of guitars makes them get old after a few listens.
Aqualung however is just as strong with piano but there are some nice guitar licks in there. I also love some of the drum beats and little Radiohead-ish atmosphere.
Overall I absoulutely love this CD. If you've read my review on the band "Kaiser Chiefs" then you know I'm not a fan of the new wave Franz Ferdinand throw back 80's scene. I personally love good solid rock like Aqualung. If you love bands like Coldplay and Travis and Keane, then PLEASE check these guys out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good piano-driven pop rock that comes dangerously close to being a classic - you'll probably love it! - 4.5 stars, January 8, 2006
This review is from: Strange & Beautiful (Audio CD)
Aqualung's "Strange And Beautiful" is actually a pretty likable piano-driven pop rock album. Singer Matt Hales has a pretty pleasant voice, even though it kind've sounds produced at times. Every song here is good, though I wouldn't call any of them "great" per se. He definitely knows how to craft a great hook and write some somewhat interesting lyrics (though they're mostly just to make the songs catchier). The musicianship is pretty good and slightly unique, although you'll probably get Coldplay or Ben Folds images in your head when you're listening to this (he sounds a bit like Ben Folds in a couple spots). Also, every song here is good. A lot of people have been panning this album as it's "mainstream", but the fact is is that it's actually pretty good! It's not a classic (this is arguable though - I wouldn't call it one because it seems pretty produced and not entirely original - the singer is also a little annoying in a couple spots), but you'll definitely be satisfied. Highly recommended!

Highlights include:
the entire album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truth in advertising, December 28, 2005
This review is from: Strange & Beautiful (Audio CD)
What an opening! The title track works its magic and indeed does cast a spell over the listener. And who couldn't be pulled in by the enchanting "Brighter Than Sunshine"? Throw in "Good Times Gonna Come" (which definitely gives off a Damien Rice vibe) and "Breaking My Heart" and you've got a superb first half.

The intro to "Left Behind" is an adrenaline rush that carries through the song. The ending of "You Turn Me Round"--the refrain of "I won't let you down"--is a truly cathartic moment. Perhaps the most beautiful track on the album, "If I Fall" envelops you in a peaceful bliss as the title overlaps with "will you catch me/ make it alright/ cause I'm standing, on the edge now/ see your face and/ will you catch me?"

In "Another Little Hole", Hales croons, "The gods have spoken, the spell is broken." Only if you take this gem out of the CD player.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful, March 9, 2006

This review is from: Strange & Beautiful (Audio CD)
I bought this cd on a whim, having heard only one track played on the radio. I wasn't disappointed. This a wonderfully mellow compilation. I gave 4 instead of 5 stars simply because for me it is a cd you kind of have to be in the mood for, a sort of rainy day soundtrack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vary talented singer/musician, November 26, 2005

Okay, this isn't my preferred genre of music. Sure, I like Coldplay and they're good, but I am more of a trance listener. That's how I stumbled across Matt Hales. Dutch dj/producer Tiesto made an original song called "UR" for Tiesto's "Just Be" album. I was absolutely in awe over the vocal and lyrics of that tune. If you haven't heard it, I would highly recommend it. Anyway, I was in the mood to buy some music other than EDM and this was on sale at the local record store for ten bucks. I picked it up and was quite impressed. Matt has an amazing talent for combining the right vocals with the right instruments, not ala Coldplay, but even more so such as Neil Diamond or Billy Joel actually. You will hear the current pop British overtones of Coldplay on this album, but I actually like Matt much more than Coldplay. If this is a genre of music you like, you will not regret purchasing the cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Plain Beautiful, June 23, 2005

This CD has not left my CD player since I purchased it. With songs like Strange and Beautiful (possibly the most moving song I have ever heard) this album is one that can be repeated over and over. All of the lyrics are so real and touching and Matt Hale's voice is quite unique and quite perfect. While there are not many upbeat songs on this album, the CD itself is so good that you don't miss them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strange and Beautiful is strangely satisfying, June 6, 2005
This review is from: Strange & Beautiful (Audio CD)
OK, let's just say it, "Strange and Beautiful" is in my category of guilty pleasures like a really good cry at the end of a romantic movie or thinking of a Grandma that died when you eat her favorite flavor of ice cream, or feeling compelled periodically to play Weezer's "Only in Dreams" from the Blue album full blast and sing along mournfully while stuck in traffic. Why it is so mesmerizing and satisfying to hear Aqualung, aka Matt Hales' angelic voice singing about the pain of relationships and just plain how lousy it is to be alive - over lush classic piano based arrangements - really defies any logic.

Obvious comparisons of Aqualung to fellow balladeers Cold Play, Keane and Radiohead spring to mind. But somehow some silky vulnerability in Matt's voice over the ...well, strange and beautiful arrangements seem more personal. Or maybe it's the cover on the cd of him sitting hunched over alone in a gray cold looking nature scene, and his facial expression of trying to eek out some peace from the situation. Made me want to suggest he get in the car right now before he catches his death from the cold!

But "Strange and Beautiful" feels straight from the heart, and so maybe that is why it is music that goes right to the heart of the listener. A seamless compilation of his first two UK only albums, it made me curious enough to want to try to get a hold of them and hear them too. Matt's classic piano roots add to the almost surreal beauty and lushness in the compositions that sooth the pain that is so aptly described in the lyrics. Maybe that contradiction of pain and beauty is what feels so real about this cd, and like other guilty pleasures, is what life is really all about.

5.0 out of 5 stars An aquired but refreshing taste., January 27, 2006
This review is from: Strange & Beautiful (Audio CD)
If you like Nick Drake and David Gray you'll love this guy. Off meters and interesting lyrics make him something interesting to listen to in this water logged over saturated want to be "rock/grunge" lost music society. Hopefully this guy will spawn another singer/songwriter ganre that took place in the 60's and 70's. The music induustry is suffering right now. We as listeners need more honesty and soulfulness rather than a paper machet record industry thinking we want to hear the crap they are systematically feeding us.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Best Buy in a Long Time!, October 23, 2005

This review is from: Strange & Beautiful (Audio CD)
I absolutely ADORE this cd, and it is by far the best purchase I've made in a long time. It is very rare for me to like every single song on any album, and Strange and Beautiful is definitely the beautiful exception. From the piano to the vocals to the lyrics, this is the kind of cd you put on, break out a bottle of wine, sit back and listen to all the way through. Matt Hales is a master in leading the listener through a gamut of emotions, and all the while sounding unbelievable. While too many artists today depend on flashy hooks, dancing, style, and no talent whatsoever, Aqualung is refreshing proof that amazing musicians with real ability are still out there. BUY THIS CD!!!!
