Taken from Chapter 5: Shy but deadly Cassowaries are large, flightless birds that are related to ostriches, emus and kiwis. Although cassowaries often run away from enemies, they sometimes stay and fight. They can kick very hard to defend themselves. They also have a long, sharp claw on the inner toe of each foot. A cassowary uses this claw like a knife to slash and kill large animals. The cassowary is the only bird that has killed human beings.
