From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD
Cream's blues-rooted rock was free, loud, and excessive, notably in concert during the trio's 196~8 lifetime. In the tracks on this compilation grandiloquence takes a backseat to serious, centralized musicmaking, from the straight blues of Robert Johnson's "Crossroads" (recorded live, with guitarist Eric Clapton intelligently taking flight) and Willie Dixon's "Spoonful" (Jack Bruce is a better bassist than harp blower) to splendid chart-denting pop tunes.
