While this book talks about some of the more usual suspects like Bigfoot, it even talks of the more "normal" unusual visitors in California, such as out-of-place large cats and crocodiles. This would probably be a good starter for an 8 or 10 year old, a good place to get them started in cryptozoology; short stories that don't go into too much detail, but enough to give a complete story.
