Editorial Reviews

Strange Folk is the first in a new series of compilations. Psych-folk, Wyrd-fold, Acid-folk, Spooky folk, Folktronica, or just plain unadorned Folk. Whatever you call it, the best folk is inherently strange. Strange Folk features the cream of today’s twisted folk scene, such as Devendra Barnhart, Joanna Newsom, Adem, James Yorkston, Tunng and Eighteenth Day of May with the legends who inspired them including Nick Drake, Pentangle, Donovan, Van Morrison and The Incredible String Band.

This review is from: Strange Folk (Audio CD)
This record is magical--gloomy, heartfelt, beautiful, and just like the title suggests, strange at times. After three years, I still actively listen to this excellent compilation. (I usually throw a record into the archive after a couple of months at best.) I don't usually listen to folk music, and that's why I think any eclectic music listener would like this record. It's one of those records that just doesn't get old. Very strange, but I think this is one of the best records I have, and out of nowhere. Besides Beth Gibbons and Devendra Banhart, I didn't really know the artists on the tracks, but wow.
