Compilation of the year,
By A Customer
This review is from: Strange Games III (Audio CD)
BBE's deal with Masters At Work has borne much lush fruit this year, and nowhere more so than on this beautiful compilation of smooth, funky, soulful grooves. Previous "Strange Games..." comps occasionally preferred rarity to quality, leading to sets which, IMHO, pitched themselves more at the chinstrokers out there than the true music lover. No such accusation could be leveled at Kenny's selection on Vol.3, which is far and away the best of the series. There is literally not a dud tune in this whole selection, and Kenny's blend is an exquisite, uplifting, mind-expanding journey from start to finish. What is particularly pleasing is the lack of flash in the mixing - Kenny really lets the music take you on a journey, and shows that the real skill is to be found in the sequencing, not pointless "look at me" turntablism. This subtlety and restraint is, for me, the hallmark of a real master DJ at work. What with Harmless, Strut, SoulJazz and many other labels bringing real taste and beauty to their selections these days, we may well be in the golden age of the compilation at the moment - Strange Games Vol. III is a definite contender for the best of the bunch in a mightily strong field. A truly wicked selection - Kenny, you know the score!

I heard some cuts of this package in a bar and knew I had to get it. This triple CD set is a fun mix of funk, R&B and dance. All 3 disks are compilations of 70's B-sides by the likes of Parliament, Herbie Hancock, Barry White, Roy Ayers and others. One of the disks has been re-mixed by Kenny Dope with some interesting treatments added. Strange Games and Funky Things Vol. 3 is quickly becoming one of the most played in my collection.

A KILLER!!,

Look no further for Funky Soul! *** The label is very good, look around in the BBE label! This is probably the best in the series. Start here! *** (Don't complain about the number of discs; it is like this: you get a 2CD, and a mixed disc as bonus that you don't have to play) *** And don't forget to look around in what the HARMLESS label has to offer!! (Africa Funk, Pulp Fusion,..)

This three cd-set contains one mixed and two unmixed cd's. The collection of old disco, funk, and fusion tunes is nicely chosen, although they are less rare then I hoped for. All the songs have a smooth and and mellow groove, nothing really uptempo. The mix-cd sounds good, although I would have expected more from the mixing style of Kenny Dope, one of the 'Masters at Work'. The mix is less smooth than the tunes. Despite the above, the music will immerse you back in the funky 70's.

This is a blistering set of soulful and elegant yet edgy and inventive set of tunes that not only show the eclectic and cutting edge taste of Kenny Dope, but also does a good job in bringing together jazzfunksoul gems that are the foundation and inspiration for the birth and progression of hip-hop and modern soul music. This compilation single handedly reignited my dormant yet eager desire to start digging into 60's and 70's jazzfunksoul masterpieces, and has led me to various timeless classic albums by the likes of RAMP, Don Blackman, Leroy Hutson, among many others, which ultimately leads me to believe that this is one of the best series of jazzfunksoul compilations I've ever come across. I always ensure that I carry this copy with me in all my travels, to bless those familiar and less familiar with good music. Buy this, and believe me, u won't hate your self for it, for this is simply good quality music. Pabs.

Yeah, I know how most of you out there feel..."another compilation by BBE..dont these fools do enough for funk and soul?!?" This album is a progression for lovers of R&B soul shaker cuts all the way to the bling anthems. It lets us know where the foundation lies...it turns heads in record stores when its spinnin...its a blessing that it is happening in our era. Hesitate no more; pick this ish up and get skooled.
