Editorial Reviews

''At some point you wonder if maybe the grass is greener, and then you go somewhere else and you realize it's not that much greener - so what do you hope for now?'' So says Yellow Ostrich's singer-guitarist Alex Schaaf, summing up the themes of his band's powerful new album, Strange Land. Schaaf knows what he's talking about - he moved to New York from Wisconsin in 2010, got a bunch of acclaim for the Yellow Ostrich album The Mistress, signed to Barsuk and toured the U.S. several times. Still, wherever you go, there you are, and that's what Strange Land is all about. Strange Land retains Schaaf's sweet, boyish voice and bracingly open-hearted songwriting, but adds a hard-won urban edge: brawny bass and busy, prominent drums, triumphal horns, and plenty of raw, overdriven guitar. As the album transitions from wistful but supercharged pop to new musical realms, it's as if you're hearing the transition the band itself made, from self-contained solo unit to a collaborative trio of outstanding musicians.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique & Quite Brilliant April 10, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
While I definitely enjoy records that are typical and expected, I most prefer those that offer something different and unique to the mix. This is very much the case with Strange Land, somewhat expected with a lot that is unexpected. The album hard to piggionhole (obviously having a diverse array of influences), but it does somewhat remind me of Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone by The Unicorns with a more spartan, rock sound. Overall, a great record you should at least give time grow on you, for I think you'll be pleasantly rewarded.

5.0 out of 5 stars You need this album April 9, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
Yellow Ostrich's signature lilting tenor vocals remain at the core of Strange Land, but the drumming and bass are both much stronger than earlier albums. There is a definite shift away from the electronic drums used in earlier albums, so if you're looking for the exact sound from earlier albums, you'll have to get over it. True to earlier writing, the album is rife with clever layering and playful lyrics. There are plenty of exceptional builds throughout the album, where the music swells and explodes as they add layer after layer of harmonies and thrashing drums. In my opinion, this is their best album yet.
