Book Description

Nick Crowell is a detective who was shot in the line of duty in a cemetery several years ago chasing a purse snatcher. While he did survive and returned to active duty, he now encounters people who have strange life changing phenomenon happening to them. They come to him for help and he does what he can for them, though it frustrates him that he can't help them all. To further complicate Crowell's life, he is still in love with his ex-wife who is now remarried and living in Jersey. Also, he's been assigned to break in a black female partner, the strikingly beautiful Jay Cole, a single mom whose husband left her seven years ago under mysterious circumstances.
Guiding him through all of this is an ex-cop by the name of Phil who runs a bar called No Promises as well as a mysterious man - now deceased- by the name of Mr. Bones, who talks to Crowell by phone from a phone booth long ago torn down!

What is life all about? What's real and what's illusion? How do you know when you can trust your own senses? Nick Crowell has faced these questions on a regular basis, ever since he was shot in a cemetery. Since then, he's come up against strange Twilight Zone sorts of happenings, spontaneous human combustion, and worse. He sees ghosts who want his help, but is frustrated because he doesn't know how to help them.

Nick is a cop, and he cares deeply about people. But his life is confusing. He gets calls from a Mr. Bones, who says Nick is providing a service and he will get more assignments. Mr. Bones has a message for Nick about life, about making a difference for other people even when he thinks there's no way he can help them. But who is Mr. Bones really? What does he want from Nick?

If you like a story filled with mind-blowing occurrences, you'll enjoy this book. Author Frank Zubek doesn't impose his answers on his readers. He gives us unexplained, otherworldly events and lets us draw our own conclusions. Readers will be eagerly awaiting a sequel to this Nick Crowell novella to find out more about
Nick and the strange path his life has taken.

Like fun entertainment with a twist of creepy and weird? Check out Frank Zubek's novella, A Strange Life. Now on audiobook as well!

Detective Nick Crowell, a police detective based out of Cleveland, Ohio, is living "a strange life." But it wasn't always this way. Crowell was a pretty normal guy living a typical cop's life. He had a wife and children and did his job for many years with honesty and integrity. Now, a little overweight and in his middle-age, he suffers a near tragic event that would turn his world upside down.

One night a young thief grabs a woman's purse right in front of Crowell and he gives chase. The pursuit makes its way through the city's streets and ends in a cemetery. During the stand-off with the purse snatcher, Nick's partner, Ben Wilson, sneaks up behind to assist. Startled, the perpetrator fires his gun a couple times, and one of the bullets hits Crowell in the gut. Crowell almost dies, but survives the encounter.

Most of A Strange Life takes place four years after the incident in the cemetery. We come to find out that since the shooting, bizarre and extraordinary things had begun to happen to Detective Crowell. People who are supposed to be dead or somewhere else suddenly show up and ask Crowell for his help. The occurrences become so frequent and disturbing that his wife ends up leaving him.

Nick Crowell acquires a new partner, an attractive African American woman named Jay Cole. Cole comes to find out about Crowell's unusual experiences and even partakes in some, but remains a faithful partner. She doesn't run scared because a few years ago, she also had an unusual and unexplainable incident that ended with the disappearance of her husband. A few years later, she had her husband declared legally dead so she could move on.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Start November 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This first Nick Crowell adventure starts the series off nicely, and gives a taste of his strange life as he deals with odd situations.
I think that Frank could have easily opened this up a bit and made it into a full-blown novel. At 40,000+ it's nearly that anyway. And there were some formatting issues, but they did not detract from the overall experience of reading the piece.
If you enjoyed The X-Files, or Twin Peaks, then I'm sure you'll enjoy The Nick Crowell Series.
