3.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Concept
Tori Amos releases a record that is covers from male artists. Inspired by Eminem's statement that words are just words and cannot hurt anybody, Tori sets out to prove him wrong. There is much to be admired about this record, but it isn't a masterpiece. And, I'm not completely convinced that Tori really accomplishes her mission, which was to show that words can hurt. Some...

I'm still a little unsure exactly how I feel about the whole Strange Little Girls album concept of covering male songs, but the song Strange Little Girl is arguably the best song on the album. This CD contains the album version, not any kind of new mix. What makes this album worth the money are the two new tracks it includes. Not surprisingly, these are two more cover songs. After All is a David Bowie song, while Only Women Bleed is an Alice Cooper creation. After All is a good song, but it seems to lack the real Tori magic. Only Women Bleed, on the other hand, has the old Tori feel to it and easily serves as the highlight of this CD. I have not heard Alice Cooper's version, so I cannot compare it to that, but it is the kind of dark, moody, angst-ridden song that Tori excels at. Apparently, this CD was only released in Germany, which makes it a little pricey, but it is well worth the money. Not every Toriphile will own a copy, and that makes it a rather special item in my own Tori collection.

Being a huge fan of Tori Amos I was hugely excited to get this single. I had already heard the title track "Strange Little Girl" and loved it. It was a very radio friendly track, which was odd because Tori is not usually radio friendly. However, a title track does not make a CD worthwhile, instead we find two extra covers not featured on the StrangeLittleGirls album. Luckily what stands here are two outstanding b-sides. Both have a piano ballad feel to them, which I love. Tori's voice is amazing and the piano is beautiful on both tracks. "After All", a David Bowie cover, is haunting, yet fulfilling at the same time. A great cover. "Only Women Bleed" is even better. It is absolutely astounding. Who knew an Alice Cooper cover could be so soft and inviting. Overall, a great CD. A bit pricy(I found it cheaper on ebay), but well worth it to any Toriphile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tori Amos on Alice Cooper, February 6, 2002
This review is from: Strange Little Girl / After All / Only Women Bleed (Audio CD)
Worth it for the cover of "Only Women Bleed" alone, though I admit I have fond childhood memories of my mother house-cleaning to Alice Cooper and "Only Women Bleed" is one I remember the most. Tori keeps the song intact, with the rise on the word "bleed" that you just wait for, but she really makes it her own; anyone hearing it for the first time would think it was one of the "Boys for Pele" b-sides.

There is much to be admired about this record, but it isn't a masterpiece. And, I'm not completely convinced that Tori really accomplishes her mission, which was to show that words can hurt. Some of the best tracks on the record are ones that Tori still performs today like Rattlesnakes and Heart of Gold. My favorite track on the record is the title track, but I don't think I have ever heard her perform it. I have seen Ms. Amos approximately 50 times in concert, so I think I get to classify myself as an EWF (her term for her fans). To Tori library is complete without this record, but if I were new to Tori, this isn't the record I would start with. I will say this: Hearing '97 Bonnie and Clyde in concert was one of the scariest moments in my life. And I loved every second of it. I also enjoyed the little 2-song EP that came out with it, but I think it is very rare and hard to find.

5.0 out of 5 stars "She survived but she's feeling old...", April 8, 2008
This review is from: Strange Little Girl / After All / Only Women Bleed (Audio CD)
Strange Little Girl import by Tori Amos is good but not brilliant. I prefer her other imports like Winter and Hey Jupiter but this import contains two b-sides. The first b-side is a cover of David Bowie's After All and the second is another cover of Alice Cooper's Only Women Bleed. Tori is great at tackling covers but these two leave me a little disappointed, only buy this import if you are a huge Tori freak like me!

I like these songs... I like where her head is in creating the concept behind these releases... Something about it just doesn't work for me.

This is the only single from the Strange Little Girls album, which makes it rather special. I was terrified when I found out that the release had been cancelled in the US and UK. The only place it was actually released was in Germany. I worry this cd will become rare like some other imports have.

"After All" has yet to impress me, but "Only Women Bleed" is worth the whole import price alone! Strange Little Girl is still one of my favorites from the album, so I like being able to pop this cd in and have it go right into that song.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strange little songs, December 5, 2003

I love Tori Amos. She is my favorite solo artist of all time. Everything she has put out has turned to gold. Although "Strange Little Girls" album was a bit of a hit and miss in terms of Tori accomplishing what she wanted with the concept of the album but her choices in cover songs is always interesting. I bought the import single of "Strange Little Girl" a couple of years ago for the b-sides. I love the b-sides on Tori's singles. They are either cover songs or previously unrealeased tracks that didn't make it on to the album. I haven't heard the original version of "After All" but I did thoroughly enjoy Tori's haunting rendition of the David Bowie song. Now "Only Women Bleed" was really interesting to hear. I have heard the Alice Cooper version but I must say that I liked Tori's version a lot more. I have always thought "Only Women Bleed" would have been perfect on the album "Strange Little Girls" because of the provocative lyrics and the results Tori got out of it when she sang it from her point of view.

2.0 out of 5 stars She's made better, October 29, 2003
This review is from: Strange Little Girl / After All / Only Women Bleed (Audio CD)
I love Tori to death, man! But I was dissapointed with this album. She had a terrific concept for an entire cover album but it completly took the edge off of her music. Peices like Eminem's '97 Bonnie and Clyde and the Clash's Strange Little girl came out great and are chilling examples of her style but the over all album is'nt as good as anything she's written herself.
