Jane went home after breakfast, and Bob had some garden work to do. That was routine for him on a Sunday this time of the year. As he placed the fertilizer around the tomato plants, he could not forget the strange sounds they had heard the night before. The more he thought about it, the more he remembered the stories about the place being a haunted house. Bob did not believe in ghosts and haunted houses, but he was curious.

He put his tools down and removed his gloves. He was determined to find the source of the strange noises. As he walked to the house he wondered if the wind had played a joke on him. Maybe it was loose clapboards flapping in the breeze. Perhaps it was an electric wire that was whipping against the house. He walked along outside of the house looking for some telltale evidence of a prank of nature. He saw nothing untoward, and reasoned that the sounds had to be coming from inside.

As he looked around on the first floor, it became evident that there were places where a small animal might find entrance from the cellar. An inspection of the basement did not sufficiently satisfy him, so Bob went up to the second floor and continued his search. His scrutiny of all the rooms, especially the one he used for storage, did not turn up anything that he attributed to the strange sounds. As he was about to admit defeat, the crawlspace came to mind.

There was a place in the ceiling in the hall of the second floor where collapsible stairs had once been placed. Perhaps ferrets, or some such animals, were able to find their way up into the crawlspace. He did not have a ladder, so he stood on a chair and tried to reach the boarded-up area, but could not reach it. He needed a ladder. In the meantime he went back to his garden work.

That night he again heard the sounds and determined that they were either coming from the next room or from in the wall. Whatever was making the noise seemed to be going up and down, and Bob was convinced that the crawlspace held the answer. On his way home from work he would stop at the hardware store to buy a stepladder.

The next day he came home with the stepladder, and was anxious to put it in place so he could examine the boarded-up spot which would allow him to open up the crawlspace. He positioned the ladder and climbed up, pushing against the boards that were screwed to the edge of the opening. Bob went downstairs and got a screwdriver. In a short while, he managed to get the boards loose, and stacked them against the wall in the hall. He stuck his head into the opening and was greeted with the musty smell of a place that had been closed up for years. It was dark in there, so Bob got a flashlight and entered the crawlspace.

The space had a floor on part of it, and he could see a box of Christmas bulbs and lights that had been stored years ago. Further back the beam of the flashlight lit up an object which required closer inspection. Bob crawled back to see what it was. He was horrified at what he was looking at!

It was a partly decomposed and mummified skeleton, which appeared to be that of a man!
