This documentary is such a wonderful glimpse into the life of Stephen Merritt. I gained newfound appreciation for songs I had written off as somewhat of a novelty. Whether you love the Magnetic Fields and want to know more, or if you just enjoy seeing into the creative process, treat yo'self and watch this film. It's so fantastic. Fo' serious.

Great Documentary!
A must watch for fans of The Magnetic Fields. This film gives some welcome insights into Stephin Merritt and The Fields' process of lyric writing, composing and arranging. There are also some cautionary tales about what happens when a person of complex insights gets misrepresented in the media. The live performances in the film are nice and give some hint of the contemplative intimacy of a Magnetic Fields' Show.
A theme of lyrical economy in the grand style flows throughout.

I am a big fan of Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields, so I was excited to get a more intimate look at his life. As primed as I was to love this movie, I thought it was just ok. It didn't really seem to have a story arc. Of course it's a documentary, but typically the filmmaker still finds a way to make a film around something - like an album release, a tour, a time of life for the band, etc. This one felt more aimless.

If anything, it was about Merritt's move to LA which came as kind of a shock in the movie. There was nothing leading up to that, like an interview with him where he talks about finding NYC restless or wanting a change. It's like he just up and moves one day toward the end of the film and then talks about it afterward.

There were no big insights, no real discoveries. It felt like a fan filming him rather than an insightful filmmaker.

A great documentary about the creative process and a rare look into Stephin Merritt's life. Watching him and Claudia fight over song arrangements was oddly endearing. If you're a Magnetic Fields fan, you'll love this movie. If not, it will probably bore you to tears.
